    Alaska Democratic party leaders have approved allowing candidates not affiliated with a political party to run in the Democratic primary.
    Unaffiliated candidates currently can run for office by petition and gathering signatures. In a release, state party chair Casey Steinau says Democrats want their party to be as inclusive as possible.

    Woman dies in Sterling Highway head-on crash
    A 19-year-old Soldotna woman died Monday in a head-on crash on the Sterling Highway.
    Alaska State Troopers say Raquelle Reynolds was alone in sport utility vehicle that crashed about five miles south of Soldotna with a pickup driven by 59-year-old Randolph Carlyle of Soldotna.
    Carlyle was transported to a hospital with injuries.
    The cause of the crash is under investigation.
    Troopers at 5:35 a.m. took a call of the crash at Mile 90.
    Troopers diverted traffic around the crash scene to side roads.

    State troopers now say that a 5-year-old Kokhanok boy was accidentally shot Saturday by an 11-year-old boy who had gotten ahold of a .22 caliber rifle. The two were apparently in the same home playing video games at the time.

    A 7.1 magnitude earthquake shook the state Sunday morning. The quake originated 60 miles west of Homer. Southern peninsula residents say they saw minimal damage.
    The tremors started about 1:30 in the morning. Michael West, the State Seismologist for the Alaska Earthquake Center, says the quake’s epicenter was about 75 miles below the earth’s surface.
