  • Trooper shoots, kills driver during physical altercation in Sterling

    Authorities say an Alaska State Trooper shot and killed a driver during an altercation in Sterling on Saturday night.
    According to a trooper dispatch, the trooper attempted to pull over a driver at about 11:20 p.m. near Mile 82 of the Sterling Highway, near the Izaak Walton State Recreation Site. The report states that the driverpulled over after a short pursuit and engaged the officer in a physical altercation.
    The trooper drew his weapon and fired, killing the male driver.

  • Cost of Kenai bluff erosion study tops $1 million

    The city of Kenai is paying almost twice as much as initially estimated for a bluff erosion study.
    The Peninsula Clarion reports the Army Corps of Engineers is splitting the study’s cost with the city. Initially estimated at $650,000, several factors have pushed that price to about $1.17 million.
    Army Corps of Engineers Kenai Bluff Stabilization Project manager Dave Martinson says a wider-than-normal scope and increased costs of other elements of the study have driven the price upward.
