• Water recedes in Willow as Houston officials eye Little Susitna River

    Heavy rain mixed with snow throughout Southcentral Alaska has caused some flooding and has city and borough officials around the Matanuska-Susitna Valley keeping a close eye on creek and river levels.
    Up to 10 homes and cabins in the Willow area and a couple homes near Houston have been affected by the flooding of area rivers and creeks.

  • Heavy snowfall cuts power to thousands around Fairbanks

    School and University of Alaska Fairbanks classes are cancelled and thousands are without power this morning in the Fairbanks area due to heavy snow.
    Golden Valley Electric Association spokeswoman Corrine Braddish blames heavy wet flakes sticking to trees.
    “”Probably because some of the trees haven’t lost their leaves completely,” Braddish said. “And the weight has bended them over into power lines.”

    Proposed state regulations could keep marijuana businesses from opening almost anywhere in downtown Ketchikan.
    The Ketchikan Daily News reports that draft regulations from the Marijuana Control Board prevent marijuana businesses from opening within 500 feet of schools, churches and other places where children congregate.
    Ketchikan officials say churches litter downtown, with many tucked away on second floors of buildings and in other areas people don’t think of.
