• New builds overtake refurbs in London office market

  The level of office refurbishment starts has dropped below new build work for the first time since early 2020 in London.
  The winter 2024 edition of the Deloitte London Office Crane Survey also revealed a decline in new construction starts and a decrease in delivered projects.

  Joint developers Ballymore and Hammerson have received final approval from the London Mayor’s office for the first phase of the £1bn Bishops Goodsyard scheme on the fringe of the Square Mile.

  Costain is understood to have landed a major tunnel fit-out deal on HS2.
  Sources close to the project said confirmation of the award is imminent.
  Earlier this week HS2 handed-out £3bn of track contracts with Ferrovial BAM and Colas Rail among the big winners.A project source told the Enquirer: “The tunnel fit-out deal is another major package on the project that everyone has been waiting to hear about and the word is that Costain has landed it.”

• £1.6m fine after mast climber crush tragedy

  A temporary access specialist has been fined £1.6m after a 24-year-old man was crushed to death.
  Jack Phillips lost his life on 8 August 2019 while working for Brand Energy and Infrastructure Services UK Ltd on South Cliff Tower in Eastbourne.
  He had been assisting while temporary Mast Climber Work Platform sections were being lifted by a lorry mounted crane.The load fell on top of Phillips when the lifting sling which was attached to the crane snapped.

  Surrey County Council has enlisted Willmott Dixon for £23m project to build a new home for Hopescourt School in Walton-on-Thames.

• Welding crisis road bridges revealed

  Highways England has confirmed the names and locations of the five bridges hit by the Severfield steel welding crisis.
  Specialist weld tests have been carried out on four of the five with the last tests presently underway.
