WhatsApp now offers encrypted backups. Here’s how to opt in
WhatsApp is finally letting users encrypt the backups of their messages. Facebook owner Mark Zuckerberg announced on Thursday that the feature is now being rolled out to iOS and Android users globally. The feature secures backups stored on Google Drive or Apple’s iCloud with end-to-end encryption. This encryption will provide more privacy and security, but it’s not enabled by default. Here’s how to turn the feature on: Make sure you’ve got the latest version of WhatsApp.

Artists create AI that predicts who the police will kill next
A new artwork has inverted the application of predictive policing. Instead of forecasting crimes committed by civilians, the project predicts which civilians will be killed by police. The future victims are memorialized on a website called Future Wake. None of them, however, are real people. Each identity and story is generated by AI. Yet he predictions about their deaths are based on historical events. The AI-generated victims explain how they died. Credit: Future Wakes. Future Wake was funded

The new Electron-Ion Collider could solve the mystery of how matter holds together
When the Nobel Prize-winning US physicist Robert Hofstadter and his team fired highly energetic electrons at a small vial of hydrogen at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in 1956, they opened the door to a new era of physics. Until then, it was thought that protons and neutrons, which make up an atom’s nucleus, were the most fundamental particles in nature. They were considered to be “dots” in space, lacking physical dimensions. Now it suddenly became clear that these par

The transport industry isn’t doing enough to halt climate change, report says
Despite a global push towards cleaner forms of energy, we are not on track to battle global warming, the International Energy Agency (IEA) warns in its World Energy Outlook 2021 report. Even more alarmingly, the scenarios mapped out in the report show that announced pledges fall far short of the emission reductions needed to limit the temperature rises to 1.5 Celsius degrees — beyond which the worst impacts of climate change will be felt. Feeling depressed yet? Me too. Transport at the co

Wow, there’s an actual use for blockchain? Helium can democratize internet connectivity
I’m always looking for good blockchain use cases. There are only a few companies that I rate. One is Helium, who calls itself “The People’s Network.” It was co-founded by Shawn Fanning (Napster co-creator) and Amir Haleem in 2013 with a mighty mission: to democratize access to the internet. They achieve this by creating their own P2P internet network. This is a radical shift to wide area networks and internet connectivity. I spoke to Frank Mong, Helium’s COO t

Review: The Surface Laptop Studio is the most versatile PC ever made
Let’s get this out of the way: The Surface Laptop Studio isn’t the laptop you buy if you want the best specs for the money. If that’s what you’re looking for, you can stop reading. Microsoft says it’s the most powerful Surface ever, but the device simply isn’t going to provide you with the performance per dollar you’d get from some traditional laptop Windows competitors, let alone Apple’s MacBooks and their overpowered ARM chips or gaming PC&rsquo

Scientists may have discovered a way to make us forget bad memories
Researchers at Cambridge University have discovered a protein in the brain of mice that may act as a biomarker for malleable memories. In other words, they may be able to determine which memories we can erase and which we are, for whatever reason, stuck with. Up front: The researchers conditioned laboratory mice by simultaneously shocking them and making a clicking noise. The mice naturally associated the sound with the shock and, thus, developed a fear response. Because the mice remembered bei
