Apple will reportedly release MacBooks with new and improved keyboards soon
Back in November, we heard rumblings Apple was planning on releasing a 13 or 14 inch MacBook Pro with the new scissor keyboard introduced on the 16-inch model. Today Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reaffirmed this rumor, claiming that the new keyboard would arrive on MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models in Q2 of 2020, as reported by MacRumors. The existing models are using the yucky butterfly switches Apple introduced with the 2015 MacBook, which had a propensity to get gunk stuck under the keys (and

Researchers use AI to translate text found on ancient clay tablets
Scientists at the University of Chicago are developing a machine learning system that can automatically transcribe text found on ancient clay tablets. The DeepScribe system will initially focus on transcribing the Cuneiform writing system used in the ancient Iranian Achaemenid Empire (550–330 BC), the University of Chicago News reports. Existing computer systems struggle to translate this script, due to its complex characters and the 3D form of the tablets on which they’re written.

No clue how to handle coronavirus as a startup founder? Here’s what we’re doing
It was a Thursday evening, only two weeks ago that I was looking into the possible spread of the coronavirus in Europe. Italy had less than 100 cases, the Netherlands (where I’m based and TNW‘s main office is) zero. We had a big decision to make: Looking at the growth rate of the virus, it was clear to me it would only be a matter of time all of Europe would feel the full affects of the epidemic. We made the call and postponed TNW conference from June to October 1-2, which seemed ve

Washington state finally lifting ban on zero-emission vehicle mandates
Earlier this week, Washington state senators signed a bill that would lift the state’s current ban on zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) programs. All that’s left for it to come into law is governor Jay Inslee’s signature, UCS USA reports. With the bill‘s passing, it’s expected to give the state’s Department of Ecology the opportunity to begin drafting a ZEV program that would require auto marques to make more electric vehicles available in the state. What being a CEO has taught me about delivering bad news
I recently had to deliver some bad news to a group of people. Delivering bad news is part of the job, and I don’t want to complain about it. I don’t take pleasure in it (on the contrary), but I also want to do it right. Kind of like a doctor who might need to do something that’ll  hurt the patient in order to make them better.  I think you can handle a crisis, or bad news, in a good or bad way, and I’m happy if I can make the best of a bad situation. Here’s why every designer should know these 4 system diagrams
Systems thinking is often heralded in different circles as a competency that’s worth investing in. Having a wider lens and being able to model the systems that influence inputs, outputs and the patterns of behavior for people using the products we build is how we can deliver real value. Most product designers tend to default to design systems as a proxy for systems thinking. They’re not entirely wrong. The ecology around building design systems does require

California won’t try to stop a $26.5 billion mega-merger between telecoms giant T-Mobile and the struggling Sprint, CNET reports. A US District Court approved the deal last month, which sees the third and fourth largest telecoms providers in the US become one. This is expected to swell T-Mobile‘s subscriber base to 140 million, helping it compete with AT&T and Verizon. The decision not to appeal the court’s ruling comes by way of a settlement between California and T-M

Nintendo Switch Online is good, but it needs N64 games to be great
Nintendo doesn’t have the best reputation when it comes to online gaming. It’s hard to know exactly why the company has never reached the heights of PS Plus or Xbox Live, but the fact that Sony and Microsoft got there first probably played a part. Nintendo, generally, likes to be an originator. With Nintendo Switch Online though, this appears to be changing. But, to really take the fight to its competitors, it needs one thing: N64 game support. First, let’s backtrack. Whe

It’s where child sexual offenders meet to support each other and share indecent images and advice on abuse techniques – with near-complete anonymity. This provides a resource for individuals to learn the “skills” to become more dangerous offenders. In response, some law enforcement agencies deploy undercover

Coronavirus has deeply affected the tech industry, but it’s also making its impact in more subtle ways.
