• Huntington Beach teachers rally for a raise, after a school year with no new contract

    HUNTINGTON BEACH — Their red T-shirts proclaimed, “HB teachers would rather be teaching.” Actually, however, the rally Tuesday, May 14, took place a couple of hours after they had completed a full day of schooling.
    Some 200 demonstrators gathered outside the Huntington Beach Union High School District office along Bolsa Avenue waving signs with such slogans as, “We value students. Please value us.”

    FRISCO, Texas — Carlos Vela scored a late goal and Los Angeles FC rallied for a 1-1 tie with FC Dallas on Sunday night.
    FC Dallas (5-5-3), which is winless in its last five games, played a man down after Matt Hedges was shown a red card for denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by Carlos Vela in the 49th minute.

  • ‘American Idol’ finalist Alejandro Aranda may have lost, but fans at Pomona watch party love him

    After Alejandro Aranda of Pomona performed his original song “Out Loud” Sunday night, fans at the Fox Theater in his hometown gave him a standing ovation as they watched the 24-year-old perform on the “American Idol” finale via the venue’s big screen.
    Moments later, the crowd of more than 100 “Alejomies” moaned as competitor Laine Hardy was named the winner of the reality singing contest.

    Laine Hardy, an 18-year-old Louisiana country singer, won the 17th season of “American Idol” on Sunday, defeating Pomona’s Alejandro Aranda, who unlike any “Idol” contestant before focused on his own original songs.
    Hardy, who was rejected by the show a season earlier, came back this year, made it through the auditions and all the way to the title.

  • Bicyclist injured in hit-and-run crash in Irvine

    A bicyclist was hospitalized after being struck by a vehicle at the Irvine Boulevard on ramp to the northbound 133 toll road Saturday night, authorities said Sunday.
    California Highway Patrol officers responded to the location about 11 p.m., according to Paul Rosales, public safety operator with the CHP.
    Officers found the bicyclist injured, but the driver had taken off toward the northbound 241 toll road, Rosales said.
