  • Charges laid in jailhouse riot

    Eight inmates at the Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre have been charged in connection with a January incident that resulted in a fire, the damaged property and a facility lockdown.
    City police were called in to contain the area but did not enter the Great Northern Road facility, police had said at the time.
    The incident also resulted in a number of minor injuries to both inmates and staff. The facility was under lockdown and public visits were suspended.

    It’s spring ahead!
    Clocks officially turn forward on Sunday at 2 a.m., marking the unofficial start of spring.
    The Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department also says its time to test all hard-wired and battery-operated smoke alarms to ensure they are in working condition.
    They recommend that all batteries be changed in smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

    A 63-year-old man has been charged with sexual assault.
    It’s alleged that on multiple occasions the accused touched a young person known to him for sexual purposes 1995 and 1999.
