Hastings & Prince Edward Public Health is warning residents about the prevalence of ticks that can cause Lyme disease.
The health unit says 98 per cent of ticks found in the jurisdiction are blacklegged, the kind that spread Lyme disease through bites.
It also says the blacklegged tick is a hard tick that lives in wooded or brushy areas with high grass and leaf litter.
Public Health offers several tips to avoid bites, such as using bug spray with DEET and covering up

United Way “Backpacks for Success” program returning this fall
A local charity is preparing to help kids go back to school this September without having to worry about supplies.
United Way of Hastings and Prince Edward has announced the return of its “Backpacks for Success” program for the 2023-24 school year.
The program helps provide backpacks full of school supplies to kids whose families would normally struggle to afford them.
Families will need to pay $12 per child to get a backpack as part of the program.

Politicians are sounding some alarms on the state of paramedic services in Eastern Ontario.
A report from the Eastern Ontario Wardens Caucus says another 15 million in tax dollars is needed annually to get services into better shape.
The overview report, released Thursday, says that influx would lead to more favourable service performance levels. The document examines ways to address increasing calls for ambulance services and increasing off-load delay times at hospitals.  -

People behind a Bancroft youth organization are asking the public to get “all aboard” with a fundraising drive.
The Switch Yard is in the midst of a campaign, which culminates with a BBQ and live auction on Friday, June 2.
It takes place at 5:30 p.m. at the building located along the former rail line on Hastings Heritage Way. The cost to attend is $10 a person or $35 for a family.

Hastings County hires Connor Dorey as new CAO
Hastings County will have a new man at the top, starting next month.
The County has announced the hiring of Connor Dorey as its next Chief Administrative Officer.
The CAO position is the top administrative job within the County, meaning he’ll oversee staff who deliver programs such as social services, paramedic services and economic development.
Dorey begins the role on June 1 and replaces long-time CAO Jim Pine, who’s retiring.
