  • Business survey suggests city could improve to spur development

    A business survey completed by the City of Sault Ste. Marie reinforced what the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce has been saying for several years.
    In essence, the results suggest the City of Sault Ste. Marie needs to do better to make the community business friendly and encourage more development and growth of small business.
    City council was told the survey results are not statistically valid because only 42 businesses submitted responses.

    Two Sault Ste. Marie residents are facing charges of assault in connection with a February incident at a business in the 200 block of Northern Avenue.
    Police say a male accused and the owner of the business began arguing and the situation escalated to a physical altercation where the male struck the victim in the face and a female hit the victim in the midsection.
    Tyler Taylor, 28, of Grosvenor Avenue and Kassandra Mayhem-Bene of Northern Avenue both face a charge of assault.

    City police have charged a 36-year-old male for driving while prohibited.
    It’s alleged the male was involved in a motor vehicle collision on March 8 and during the investigation, officers learned of his driving status.
    Justin Richards of Nebenaigoching Street faces a single charge of driving while prohibited. He is to appear in court April 8.

    A 42-year-old woman is facing charges after an incident at a retirement home.
    Police say the woman was asked to leave a relative’s room in the retirement home on Van Daele Street when she became upset and struck an attendant with a piece of equipment.
    Lucia Silvano, of Rossmore Road has been charged with assault with a weapon. She is to appear in court April 15.
