• Nanaimo byelection to occur before February, says Horgan

  VICTORIA — A byelection in the provincial riding of Nanaimo will happen on or before the start of January.
  Premier John Horgan said Monday he wants to a new MLA in the riding before his government introduces its new budget, which is typically the second week of February. That would mean the 28-day campaign would start in early January at the latest.
  “We will ensure that there is a member from Nanaimo in the legislature to debate the budget in February,” said Horgan.

  The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is investigating an early Sunday morning assault that left a man dead in Surrey.
  Surrey RCMP say the incident happened at around 2:45 a.m.
  Police responded to a report of an assault in the area of 104 Avenue and King George Boulevard. However, RCMP say, neither the caller nor the victim of the assault were cooperative with police and both fled the scene before officers arrived.Later Sunday, at around 2:40 p.m., Surrey RCMP was notified by the B.C.

  The Vancouver Police Department has unleashed its annual canine calendar.
  The 2019 Vancouver Police Dog Calendar features members of the VPD’s canine unit and their four-legged partners. Each calendar costs $15 with proceeds going towards the B.C. Cancer Foundation and the B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation.
  Since 2010, the sale of the calendars has raised $200,000 for charity.

  A 34-year-old man died in skydiving accident in the North Okanagan on Saturday,
  The parachuting accident happened just before 7 p.m. in an area off Highway 97 in the community of Westwold.The man, who Vernon RCMP say was a U.S. citizen,  sustained fatal injuries in the incident and was pronounced dead at the scene.

  Three relatively strong earthquakes were recorded Sunday night in the Pacific Ocean off Vancouver Island.
