The Riley Creek wildfire south of Lillooet is seeing a modified response due to it burning in unsafe and inaccessible terrain.
The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) provided an update about the wildfire on Monday, June 29, at 4:19 p.m.

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) has confirmed that escaped inmate Ernest Egon Jensen, 69, has been found dead.
In a statement released just after 2 p.m. today (June 29), CSC said Jensen was found “in the ocean off the coast of Metchosin.”
West Shore RCMP said Jensen’s body was recovered near the shoreline along William Head Institution by the RCMP West Coast Marine Services alongside Metchosin Fire Department.

Truck incident kills Lumby youth

A summer celebration turned tragic in Lumby over the weekend.
Two pedestrians were hit by a truck on a rural property Saturday shortly before 12 p.m.
Despite immediate first aid provided by youth witnesses and efforts of paramedics when they arrived, a 15-year-old Lumby youth died.
A second youth, who was also struck by the pick-up, was transported to hospital by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the pick-up truck fled the scene but was later located by police.

Police say the six people missing after a charter boat sank off the coast of Richmond are now presumed dead.
Four men and two women remain unaccounted for Monday afternoon, more than a day after the vessel sank near Roberts Bank on Sunday (June 28). Police say they are presumed to have drowned.
Richmond RCMP now say the search has been suspended and search efforts have now shifted to recovery.
It’s believed the boat sank in very deep waters, police say.

The lockdown has been in effect since June 26 to enable staff members to conduct an exceptional search.

Mainstage is back in Vernon after a successful festival in Fort St. John in 2025.
The annual drama festival returns to the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre from July 6 to 10 with five plays.

Surrey’s Natasha Wodak was the fastest woman among Beneva Vancouver Half Marathon runners on Sunday, June 28.
Thousands of runners filled streets of Vancouver for the event, hosted by Canada Running Series.

Mission Institution inmate taken to hospital after assault

An inmate was taken to hospital after an assault at Mission Institution earlier this month.
According to a news release from the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) on Monday (June 29), the inmate received treatment and has since returned to Mission Institution.
The incident occurred in the prison’s medium security unit on June 20. Per the release, the injured inmate was evaluated by staff before they were taken to hospital.
Mission RCMP is investigating the assault alongside the prison. -

An impaired driver was arrested after allegedly fleeing a hit-and-run and crashing into a front yard in Abbotsford on Sunday (June 28).
According to Abbotsford Police Department’s weekend recap, the driver provided a breath sample more than 2.5 times the legal limit after he was arrested.
Police say a criminal investigation is ongoing.
Overall, the department removed 30 impaired drivers from the road between June 26 and 29. -

One person was taken to hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries after a crash in Abbotsford on Sunday (June 28).
The single-vehicle collision occurred at approximately 6:50 p.m. on Townshipline Road between Glenmore Road and Gladwin Road.
The Abbotsford Police Department said the vehicle was travelling at excessive speed when it lost control and flipped into a ditch. The driver was the lone occupant of the vehicle.

Six people remain missing after a boat sank in the water near Roberts Bank on Sunday morning.
B.C. RCMP said Sunday evening that six people are unaccounted for as of 7:44 p.m., eight hours after a charter vessel began taking on water around 11:45 a.m. The search is ongoing.
Police say it’s believed that 10 people were on board the vessel when it began taking on water. It was reported to police by another civilian vessel.
