    The royal commission has denied the application of Cardinal George Pell to give his much anticipated evidence via videolink from Rome. The royal commission chairman Peter McClellan said the commission wouldn't want to exacerbate Cardinal Pell's health problems, but it would prefer he appear in person and will therefore reschedule his appearance to February in Ballarat.

    An independent monitor of the McArthur River Mine in the Northern Territory says it's urgent that the mine develop a long-term plan to prevent acid, salt and metal seeping in to groundwater from its large volumes of waste rock. Today, the monitor handed the Northern Territory Government its report card for 2014 on the ongoing environmental concerns about the mine.
