A 20-year-old Carleton student who took his own life in February 2016 appeared calm and collected only hours after he called a suicide hotline and was taken to hospital following a “mini-standoff” with police.
Doctors, psychiatrists, police officers, social workers and mental health counsellors have been among the witnesses at an inquest into the Feb. 15, 2016 suicide of Jason Renato Simon, 18 days after he had been taken to hospital by ambulance to be assessed.

Friday was Rideau-Rockcliffe councillor Tobi Nussbaum’s last day on the job as municipal representative for Ward 13. He tendered his resignation letter to city clerk and solicitor Rick O’Connor in advance of assuming the position of chief executive officer of the National Capital Commission starting on Feb. 4.
O’Connor said the Municipal Act allowed for two possible outcomes regarding Nussbaum’s replacement.

Two displaced after fire at Cumberland-area home
East-end firefighters were already investigating the smell of smoke in the air Thursday afternoon when they spotted a plume of black smoke southeast of Cumberland.
That was when 911 calls started coming in reporting flames at a two-storey house on O’Toole Road.
The fire that engulfed the home wasn’t under control until 4:05 p.m.
No one was injured, but two displaced adults were being helped by the Canadian Red Cross and the Salvation Army.

The owner of the Lincoln Fields Shopping Centre has filed plans with the city to demolish the aging mall and replace it with a two-storey shop and Metro grocery store.

A 23-year-old man arrested following a knife-point robbery on Merivale Road Wednesday has had two additional robberies added to his charge sheet.

Gatineau police were happy to be responding to a false alarm at an area high school Friday.
Responders were summoned to École secondaire de l’Ile on St-Rédempteur Street at about 9:30 a.m. for reports of a 13-year-old who had apparently drowned during a supervised activity at the institution.
But when police and paramedics arrived, they were told the girl had regained consciousness thanks to fast action by rescuers inside the school.

Firefighters’ “rapid-fire attack” made quick work of a reported furnace fire at a Barrhaven duplex Friday morning, preventing flames from spreading beyond a furnace room and into an adjoining unit.

OPP 'increasingly concerned' for missing Montague man, 75
Police got new information that a 75-year-old Montague Township man last seen last summer was coming home for the holidays.
But Robert William Lambert, who was reported missing in November, never showed up.
Now Lanark County OPP reports that investigators are “increasingly concerned” about the safety of the senior citizen, who often needs help to travel and relies on others for rides.

East-end firefighters were already investigating the smell of smoke in the air Thursday afternoon when they spotted a plume of black smoke southeast of Cumberland.
That’s when 911 calls started coming in reporting flames at a two-storey house on O’Toole Rd.
