Hum: The new Canada Food Guide shouldn't scare you away from dining out
The new Canada Food Guide, released Tuesday, does not come right out and say don’t go to restaurants.
But two of its broad recommendations — “cook more often” and “choose healthy menu options when eating out” — surely imply that restaurant dining can be a risky behaviour.
As someone whose job description includes eating more than 100 restaurant meals each year, I can see where the guide is coming from. There have been times when, for scheduling reasons, -

Cohen: Great cities understand what urban dwellers need to truly flourish
BORDEAUX, France – What makes a great city? What gives it character, soul, distinction and style?
London. Rome. Tokyo. Paris. Capitals are seats of power, of course, where the governing élite lives. They are historically cockpits of commerce and culture.
(For that reason these are great cities in a way that Washington, Ottawa, Canberra and Brasilia are not. Those are company towns, with their charms, but no challenge to New York and Chicago, Montreal and Toronto, Melbourne and Sydne -

Andrey: Ontario's funding changes will hurt post-secondary education
This is a sad moment for education in Ontario. The Doug Ford government’s announcement that it will significantly cut grants available through the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) while reducing tuition fees by 10 per cent is a regressive assault on the accessibility and quality of Ontario’s universities and colleges.
By trumpeting a tuition reduction while more quietly making dramatic cuts to OSAP, the government is trying to project that it is making higher education more -
Dunstan: Ontario government's tuition changes aren't a poison pill
Many commentators, politicians and student groups have been giving the impression that recently announced reforms to the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) are, as NDP MPP Chris Glover put it, “a sugar-coated poison pill” for students in this province. I’m a student at an Ontario university. I can see the sugar-coating in these changes, but I can’t find any poison.
Supposedly, the hidden poison comes in the form of higher costs for students as grants are eliminated -

Charlebois: Canada’s Food Guide – a dish with a dash of condescension
Say goodbye to the four food groups; they are now gone. Almost 12 years after the launch of the previous version, Canada’s new food guide celebrates food by displaying a plate filled with greens, fruits, plant proteins and grains. And if you look very carefully, you’ll see a cup of yogurt, alongside a piece of beef that looks a little like a piece of wood.
Unlike the old version, the new guide can apply to different demographic groups and lifestyles. Somewhat less innovative, it also -

Officers didn’t need it to track him down, though.
Summoned by alert witnesses, they quickly found the rest of the vehicle and spotted the driver walking nearby, Kingston police said in a press release about the incident early Sunday near the intersection of Portsmouth Avenue and Bath Roa -

The bad news is that it will be part of a Colorado low that’s expected to bring up to 10 cm of snow to the Ottawa and St. Lawrence valleys Tuesday night and into Wednesday, possibly followed by freezing rain Wednesday.
Snow tonight and Wednesday with freezing rain possible Wednesday, Environment Canada said Tuesday in a special weather statement issued as an -

Drunk driver arrested walking on Hwy 5 after ditching stolen car, police say
A 46-year-old Ottawa man is facing impaired driving, flight from police and dangerous driving charges after police allege he led them on a drunken chase in a stolen car early Monday in Hull.
The first thing that drew Gatineau police officers’ attention about an idling car stopped on Maisonneuve Boulevard early Monday morning was that the driver’s side window was open in frigid temperatures.
When they talked to the driver at about 2:30 a.m., he showed signs of being impaired by alcoho
