The strange alchemy of Shopify's millennials
In the three years since it issued stock to the public, Ottawa’s electronic commerce star Shopify has shaped thousands of mostly young grads into a sales, support and engineering force recognized globally. Shareholders, who gather for their annual meeting on May 30, can’t help but marvel at the result, and wonder whether the pace can continue.
The capital region has not seen this for a long, long time. Shopify, born 14 years ago above an Elgin Street coffee shop, is busting out all o -

It was an emotional Sunday service at the First Church of Christ, Scientist as members returned to the church for the first time since learning a beloved member of their congregation was killed in a brazen attack.
Elisabeth Salm, 59, a librarian at the Christian Science Reading Room since May 2011, was found bloodied, beaten unconscious and half-naked inside the office of the drop-in space at 141C Laurier Ave. West around 1 p.m. Thursday.
Her killing remains unsolved. Homicide detectives said Su -

The myth surrounding Canadian Leopard tanks in Afghanistan – driving away decommissioned tanks used as monuments and shipping them to war never happened
As stories go it’s a pretty good one.
The Canadian Army was up against a tough enemy – the Taliban – in Afghanistan. Commanders called for Leopard tanks to join the battle but those armored vehicles had been mothballed and made into monuments.
So the ever resourceful Canadian Army crews jumped in the Leopard tanks mounted on concrete pads outside bases as monuments and drove them off those platforms, making sure they were shipped to their comrades in Afghanistan.

Wilson: Mentally ill people should be allowed assisted death
It isn’t fair and it shouldn’t be legal to sentence people to a life of agony.
If medical treatments can’t make life bearable, then people should have access to a medically assisted death. This includes those suffering from mental illness, provided they meet the criteria set out by the Supreme Court based on our Constitution. Those with mental illness should have the same rights as the rest of us and they should have the accommodations to enable them to exercise those rights.
