The planning committee made a pair of rare moves Tuesday, rejecting the advice of staff and voting to reduce the height of a new condominium building proposed for Westboro.
But the final result — which could see a five-storey building at 398, 402 and 406 Roosevelt Ave., instead of the six-storey structure endorsed by staff — did not appear to ease Coun. Jeff Leiper’s fears about the uncertainty caused by an outdated plan for how his community should be redeveloped.

Looking for 'revenge,' Pine View starts up third-party advertiser, manager considers run for council
Pine View Golf Course and its general manager see Ottawa’s municipal election as a vehicle for retribution against city hall.

Top court set to hear Vice case that pits media freedoms against police powers
Canada’s highest court is set to grapple with a closely watched case that pits the ability of journalists to do their work effectively against the ability of police and prosecutors to do theirs.
At Wednesday’s scheduled hearing, Vice Media planned to urge the Supreme Court of Canada to overturn a ruling that reporter Ben Makuch give the RCMP materials related to interviews he did with an accused terrorist. Vice argues that being forced to comply with the order would seriously undermi -

Scanlan: Akwesasne chief runs to inspire native youth to follow his lead
When Troy Thompson was running for district chief of the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne three years ago, he campaigned on two wheels.
Cornwall Island, Thompson’s district, is about 11 kilometres long with a population of 12,000. Thompson visited more than 400 homes, by bicycle.
“I took a week off work and happened to pick the hottest week of the summer,” Thompson says, while scanning the island from across the St. Lawrence River in Cornwall. “I was wearing a nice shirt and k -

Red-light camera loophole for Quebec motorists closed by end of June, city says
Owners of Quebec-plated vehicles will start receiving tickets this summer if those vehicles are caught on camera running red lights in Ottawa.
There has been a huge loophole in red-light camera enforcement ever since Ottawa installed its first cameras in 2000. The city has been unable to send owners of Quebec-registered vehicles tickets because it had no way to access motorists’ information. The Ontario government gave the city the authority to fine out-of-province motorists in 2013, but t -

Today's letters: No 'speech' at royal wedding
Royal wedding sermon wasn’t a ‘speech’
I wish I had a dollar for every time I heard a Canadian news commentator on the royal wedding call Bishop Michael Curry’s sermon a “speech.”
It would go a long way toward trading in the rust bucket of a car that sits in the “Minister” parking spot at the church I serve. The coverage reminds me of just how rusty our public religious discourse is.
In short, a sermon is always based on scripture, which is why in -

Full load on trip to junkyard costs driver $510 in tickets
There was so much garbage in a junkyard-bound car pulled over Tuesday morning by Ottawa police’s traffic unit that items were even blocking the driver’s pedals.
Luckily an officer could easily reach the ticket book to write a fistful on charges including failing to wear a seatbelt, having an insecure load and driving “while crowded.”
The total for the motorist pulled over on Bentley Avenue was $510 and they had to rectify the situation before driving away, reported Const. -

Kurl: Team Trudeau, skating through spring with a little less grace
At the height of these hockey playoffs, let us pause for a moment and remember the way Team Liberal used to skate. Ballet on ice it was; Canadians oohed and aahed as Captain Trudeau carved his blades like Connor McDavid, shot the puck with hands soft as Brad Wheeler’s, with the precision of Mark Schifele.
Today, the Liberal cabinet more resembles a team of third-line grinders, still dominant, but making ugly hits and taking unnecessary penalties.

Fan: We should reimagine how we think about autism
Humanity would be much diminished without the contributions of socio-neurologically “atypical” individuals. Why seek to “normalize” them?
How ironic is it that in an age of heightened sensitivity for the marginalized, the general public’s conception of autism remains largely constrained by stigmatic notions of “social awkwardness,” “nerdiness” and “being on the spectrum.” Our scientific understanding of the condition has vastly ad -

Coyle: Schools must be better equipped to handle discrimination
With the return of warm weather and longer daylight, students begin to dream of carefree summer months. For some children, however, summer means more than a chance to be free from schoolwork; it means a reprieve from the misery of bullying and discrimination, much of which is reinforced by inadequate systems for responding to the intolerance and harassment students can face in school.
To address the reality of discrimination in our educational systems, the community organization Parents for Dive -

Here’s a roundup of the most interesting races:

Here is every political party running in Ontario's June 7 election
You probably won’t see their elections signs — they may not even have a candidate in many of the province’s 124 ridings — but Ontario is rich in fringe, or, shall we say, lower-prominence parties. Some are earnest. Some seem frivolous. Some have one-issue on their platform, while others seek a complete revamp of the social system.
Registering a political party is free, but the party must first reserve the name with Elections Ontario, then appoint a chief financial officer -

As I recently reported in the Ottawa Citizen the Department of National Defence is now planning a new $1.1 billion building in Ottawa’s west end.

The facility will be in addition to its headquarters at the former Nortel campus on Carling Avenue which, when fully occupied, will house almost 9,000 employees.
