Family to run on race weekend in memory of daughter who died of cancer
Before her daughter Phoebe got sick, Jenny Doull used to be a runner.
“Just having a child in the hospital, your health comes last,” Doull said. “So I’m really happy to be back running. And it’s done wonders for my mental health as a bereaved parent. It kind of helps to calm my mind, and I often think about Phoebe on my runs.”
In 2010, Phoebe was diagnosed with infant leukemia at just nine weeks old. She was given a 15 per cent chance of surviving past age fiv -

Dawson: Your money is subsidizing a luxury yacht company
The lifestyles of the rich and famous, man.
While the rest of us walk our dogs along the canal or maybe hop in a canoe or onto a paddleboard, a swanky European company is set to charge the willing and able thousands of dollars to cruise on luxury yachts as they go up and down the waterway. The first boats started cruising the canal last weekend — and Le Boat says it’s more than 70 per cent sold out for the season.
Sounds nice, doesn’t it?

Public Services and Procurement Canada has highlighted its hiring of a Fairness Monitor as a way to ensure “fairness, openness and transparency of the competitive procurement process” on the Canadian Surface Combatant program.

Editorial: Sober second thought on impaired driving bill
When the federal Liberals unveiled its overhaul of impaired driving legislation in April 2017, alongside its trademark cannabis legalization bill, one of the most immediately surprising changes was that it was to allow police to request breath samples from drivers whenever they wanted – officers didn’t need to suspect the driver was impaired.
Other nations, such as Australia and Ireland, say these powers to randomly breathalyze drivers dramatically reduce impaired driving. That&rsquo -

Gormley: Free expression isn't at odds with public safety
One year ago, the Court of Appeal for Ontario deftly summarized an error committed by both those who oppose and support the protection of journalists’ sources. It summarized the error by making it.
“A free and vigorous press is essential to the proper functioning of a democracy,” it said. True enough.
“The protection of society from serious criminal activity is equally important to the maintenance of a functioning democracy,” it said. Right again.
But then this: &ld -

Ottawa’s power trio: Meet three women who are working to improve the local music scene
For decades, playing music has been considered a diversion, something fun to do until one is forced to follow that eternal parental advice espoused by George Thorogood, and “get a real job.”
Well, that attitude is changing fast, thanks to a number of studies conducted in recent years that show the importance of music to the general economy. Live music, for example, contributes a whopping $1.2 billion to Ontario’s economy, according to a 2015 Music Canada-commissioned report on -

Today's letters: Election season!
Should I even bother voting this time?
In the many, many years since I became an adult with the right to vote in federal and provincial elections, I have taken pride in always casting a vote.
I am non-partisan, so I have voted Conservative, Liberal and NDP at one time or another, either to offer support to a party I believe is best for that particular time, or to get rid of someone like Stephen Harper.
But June 7, what to do? Is it best to go with the devil you know (Kathleen Wynne) or the great -

Ottawa Race Weekend organizers plan for stormy skies
With stormy skies ahead for Saturday and Sunday, Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend organizers say runners should be prepared for potential delays and seek shelter if conditions get rough.
If thunder or lightning crash the party before a race begins, organizers said they will delay its start until the storm passes. This could impact the start times of races that follow, spokeswoman Annie Boucher said.
Three races are scheduled for Saturday — the Ottawa 2K, HTG Sports Ottawa 5K and Ottawa 10K &md -
It's back: Black is the new, well, black
Like the ubiquitous little black dress, using black in home décor has always been a timeless classic. But this staple of design, often used sparingly as a subtle accent, has recently ramped up to take centre stage, showing how black is back – big time.
From cabinets to fixtures, window trim, doors, appliances, floors and whole rooms, black is everywhere. It has even been deemed the colour of the year for 2018 by no less than three paint makers, and figures to feature prominently in -
Gabriela Dabrowski loves life as a tennis pro, but she misses the family cats … a lot
Gabriela Dabrowski professes much love for her hometown.
Ottawa is not conducive to year-round outdoor preparation for world-class tennis, though, so the 26-year-old has made Tampa, Fla., her training base and home away from home.
Saddlebrook resort coaches are supportive, plus she knows the fitness trainers well. People she stays with when the Women’s Tennis Association Tour schedule doesn’t have her flying around the world are tennis-loving friends.
“I don’t get to see -
Finding lightning in a bottle: The chemistry between tennis doubles players
Finding a doubles partner for Grand Slam tennis requires connections, patience, persistence and a good smartphone data plan.
Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski won a French Open mixed doubles championship with India’s Rohan Bopanna last June, and they played together at Wimbledon in July and the U.S. Open in September, losing in the quarter-finals both times.
Little wonder, then, that Dabrowski was blindsided when she learned Bopanna had decided to play in the Australian Open in January wit -
Meet Gabriela Dabrowski: Ottawa's overnight tennis success, 19 years in the making
Only four Canadians have reached the pinnacle of tennis in the modern era.
They have achieved success at the highest level, winning one or more of the sport’s four “Grand Slam” tournaments: Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, the French Open or the Australian Open.
The first was Montreal’s Sébastien Lareau, a U.S. Open men’s doubles winner with American Alex O’Brien in 1999. Toronto’s Daniel Nestor became a national hero with a dozen titles between 200 -
Opinion: How America and Canada are diverging on the sad legacy of torture
Canada recently apologized and gave $10 million to a Canadian tortured by Americans. Meanwhile, the United States just promoted someone who oversaw torture to the post of CIA director.
The political contrast between the Canadian and American approaches is jarring. The differences owe a lot to stronger protections in Canadian law.
In 2002, Gina Haspel ran a CIA black site in Thailand where at least one detainee was tortured with waterboarding, which is a way to make someone feel like they are dro -
Kathleen Wynne responds to Doug Ford's plan to cut 6 billion dollars from the budget
“I think the campaign has to be about shining a light on what’s really being said and what the real impact will be.”
Doug Ford has made several big campaign promises that Kathleen Wynne thinks just won’t work.

MacDougall: It’s time for Trudeau to show some substance on something … anything, really
One of the burdens of being prime minister is that it affords the occupant of the office scant room to hide. Not that Justin Trudeau isn’t trying.
The prime minister returned from his trip to New York and Boston with sweet Fanny Adams on borders or trade, i.e. the two major irritants in Canada’s relationship with The Massive Irritant fronting the Gazebo of Crazy™ formerly known as the presidency.
Not that you’d know Canada was much bothered — on either front — -
Rain, thunderstorms expected over next few days

Anything at all that you might want to stay dry for?

Environment Canada is predicting rain and thunderstorms over the next three days.

Reevely: Newly vulnerable Ford campaign will force Ontario's parties to focus on Toronto
The wheels aren’t off the Doug Ford campaign to be premier of Ontario, but they’re wobbling something fierce.
The Progressive Conservatives and New Democrats are neck-and-neck, according to three separate recent polls. The Tories are destroying the Liberals, which was what Ford was put into his party’s leadership to do. But they’re now having to resist attacks from an unexpected direction.
On Thursday, the still-kicking Liberals shared detailed allegations that Ford himse -
