All eyes on Canada ahead of pot legalization, says top cannabis official
TORONTO – Canada’s top cannabis policy bureaucrat says every time he travels outside of Canada, he is reminded anew of just what a novel enterprise this country has embarked upon.
“Canada is moving into a place that no country — other than Uruguay — has ventured to go,” Eric Costen, director general for the federal government’s cannabis legalization and regulation branch, told a conference Thursday.
The world is watching Canada’s plan to legalize r -
Inside the mystifying world of marathon cheating — where the system is hard to beat and the deceit hard to explain
Shaving a few kilometres off of a 42.2-kilometre race might seem pretty trivial to you. The difference between running 42 kilometres and, say, 34 kilometres is immaterial, insofar as for the majority of human beings neither is any more achievable than the other.
But for the type of person for whom the sanctity of marathoning matters, though, shaving a couple kilometres is sacrilegious. For them, each of the marathon’s 42,195 metres is consecrate, venerated.
In other words, marathoner -
Cancer battle fought, Mélanie E moves forward with celebratory concert and new music
For Mélanie Hartshorn-Walton, Feb. 8, 2017 was blessed with the best of gigs and fraught with the worst of diagnoses.
That night, the Barrhaven woman’s francophone jazz project, Mélanie E, had its coming-out concert at the TD Ottawa Winter Jazz Festival. But hours before she and her quartet hit the stage, Hartshorn-Walton learned she had breast cancer.
“It was very surreal,” she recalls. “Keith, my husband and tuba player in the band, would look at me a -

Jeff McGregor, on lessons learned from committing Mark Turner's improvising to paper
New York saxophonist, composer and educator Jeff McGregor first discovered the music of Mark Turner through Turner’s collaborations with guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, and as he tells it, was “totally hooked” from there on out.
This interest in Turner’s very personal and deeply influential music eventually led McGregor, a Calgary native, to write his new book entitled Mark Turner: Transcriptions & Essays, a collection of meticulously notated solos paired with a series of -

Outaouais health officials vow to improve high-risk pregnancy procedures following coroner's report
The Outaouais health council has moved to equip its hospitals with emergency caesarean section kits and implement specialized high-risk pregnancy training following a coroner’s report that said the lack of such items may have contributed to the death of a Quebec woman and her unborn child.
In a ruling released publicly this week, coroner Pascale Boulay wrote that Marie-Jacque Fortin, 32, collapsed at her home on March 7, 2016, minutes before 9 p.m. Police were at the scene at 9:02 p.m. and -
Ottawa real estate giant Minto files for initial public offering estimated at $200 million on TSX
Minto Group appears set to raise an estimated $200 million through a listing on the TSX.
The company, one of Ottawa’s largest real estate firms, this week filed to issue investment units to the public through a new entity called Minto Apartment Real Estate Investment Trust. The price for each REIT unit will be set in coming days, thus determining the final value of the offering. (REITs are more like a mutual fund than a public corporation, which issues shares.)
Creating the REIT is part of -

Today's letters: Pot, assisted suicide, French and Emily Carr
Why the healthy should be allowed assisted suicideRe: Honesty needed in long-term care, May 22
I live in a retirement home and I, like the majority of the people here, am relatively healthy. We are all deteriorating with age and if we continue to live we will eventually be sentenced to a long-term care home.
Everybody to whom I have spoken has three things in common. They are practicing Catholics, they enjoy relatively good health and they would prefer to die rather than become ill and -

Scholarship a tribute to Swim Ottawa founder Tom Anzai
An anonymous donor is helping Swim Ottawa establish a scholarship in honour of one of the group’s founder who died in an accident last year.
The $1,000 Tom Anzai Memorial Swimming Scholarship will be awarded each June. It’s for Grade 12 graduates who have been club members for at least three years, represented the club at the regional level or above and show “sportsmanship and leadership” plus a “passion for life-long swimming.”
That summed up Anzai, who found -
Renovation Transformation: Remake of Manor Park home outshines buying new
A home might be too expensive, too small or too big. Maybe it’s in the right location but outdated or the wrong location but modern and sophisticated.
There are many reasons why finding a home is stressful and finding the perfect home is nearly impossible. That’s why homeowner Ellis Westwood said no to moving and yes to an exhaustive and transformative renovation.
BEFORE: The original home was built in 1948 and mirrors many post-war homes found across Ottawa.

Maple Flag exercise significantly cut back but exact reasons why remain murky
This year’s Maple Flag exercise will run for only 12 days, less than half of time usually earmarked for the RCAF’s annual premier training event.
Exercise Maple Flag will take place at Cold Lake, Alberta from June 11 to June 22, with more than 1,500 Canadian military personnel and hundreds of military staff from other nations, according to the RCAF.
But previous Maple Flag exercises have run more than twice as long. Last year Maple Flag ran from May 29 to June 23 (26 days). It involv -

Cormorant search and rescue helicopters to be modernized – Italian firm to get sole-source contract
The Canadian military is moving ahead with plans to upgrade its Cormorant search-and-rescue helicopter fleet and will also examine whether to buy or lease more of the same aircraft.
The federal government notified industry Thursday morning of the sole source deal to modernize the 14 helicopters. There was no cost attached to the plan but a previous estimate on the upgrade put the price-tag anywhere between $500 million to $1.5 billion.
