An Ottawa man who has become the face of the fight against Ottawa police racial profiling has been charged with defrauding his former employer of thousands of dollars in automobile insurance in an alleged rental car scheme involving two others, this newspaper has learned.
Chad Aiken, who previously worked at Avis car rental, has been charged with fraud, conspiracy to commit fraud and fraudulent concealment.
Aiken, 31, was just a teenager when he was pulled over in 2005 by Ottawa police in a traf

Ottawa man gets longer sentence for extensive child porn collection
An Ottawa IT specialist who amassed one of the “largest and worst” child porn collections police said they’d ever seen will serve even more time behind bars, thanks to a successful appeal by the Crown.
Mahlon Inksetter, then 51, was sentenced to two years less a day plus three years’ probation in August 2017.
But in a decision released Wednesday, the Court of Appeal for Ontario instead imposed a three-and-a-half year sentence on charges of possessing child pornograph -
Unique bike offers those in therapy an opportunity to race
Members of the LiquidGym rehab centre never imagined they’d be able to take part in Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend.
Many of them have suffered debilitating injuries, or diseases such as Parkinson’s, that have taken away their mobility.
But with the help of specialized bright yellow walking bikes — 50 of which will be at the starting line of the 2K race this weekend — moving has become a little easier.
The bike, called the Alinker, was created by Dutch architect B -
Police following stolen credit card in search for robbery, assault suspects
Police say a credit card stolen during a violent residential robbery was used recently in Brockville, where two people suspected of beating and robbing an Ottawa man were seen on a gas station surveillance camera.
According to police, one man and one woman allegedly broke into an apartment in the 100 block of Charlotte Street in Lowertown around 7 p.m. on March 31.
Once inside, they allegedly assaulted a 62-year-old man, who was later taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Ottawa man who survived 'widow-maker' heart attack running in gratitude
Marc Cashman was lying on his bed watching television last May when his chest suddenly felt compressed.
He began sweating profusely. His breathing became heavy. Then he felt his left arm go numb.
“At first I thought I was having a panic attack,” the 51 year old said. “I got up and took a couple of Aspirin. It was just instinct. I (splashed) some water on my face, then I woke my wife up and she said, ‘Oh my God, you’re grey. I’m calling 911.'”

Leaseholders at fire-damaged Ashcroft condo will move to units in neighbouring tower
Ashcroft Homes said it will offer accommodations to leaseholders displaced from a highrise that was under construction when it was damaged by fire in April.
Ashcroft president David Choo said in a statement Wednesday the developer will place those who signed a lease for the Envie Plus condo for the next school year in the neighbouring Envie Student, which the company said is at 98 per cent occupancy.
Leasing at Envie Plus is expected to resume in May 2019 “to coincide with student schedule -

The damage marked the second time someone had allegedly attempted to vandalize the Buddha statue at the Hilda Jayewardenaramaya Buddhist Monastery, near the intersection of Heron Road and Alta Vista Drive.
A man was caught on security video around 12:45 am damaging the statue. In the video, a man carrying a piece of lumber in his left hand is seen crossing the road to the temple -

House Works: Buying supplies online revolutionizes Canadian DIY
Online shopping makes it easier to buy great consumer goods at the lowest possible prices without traveling to a physical store, and online shopping is also changing the way do-it-yourself home improvement happens, too.
A Canadian outfit called Paint Supplies Direct (www.paintsuppliesdirect.ca) is one case in point that I’ve found. It’s the work of John Burke and his partner James Mumby, a Canadian entrepreneur with a humble beginning in the paint product business 40 years ago.

Glavin: Why the Israel-Palestine debate makes people lose their minds
There is something about Israel that seems to make people lose their damn minds. It is a disturbing phenomenon. It is by no means confined to that vast and utterly useless constituency that pretends to be pro-Palestinian, and draws liberally from the expansive resources of Western bourgeois activism, and yet has somehow failed to lift so much as an ounce from the crushing weight of suffering that burdens the backs of the desperate masses in Gaza.
It is a kind of craziness that is ubiquitous, too -

Liberal candidates say they would entertain funding request from city over Prince of Wales Bridge
The provincial Liberals are using the city’s Prince of Wales Bridge as an election pawn.
However, they aren’t promising money to fix the historic Ottawa River crossing. They’re only offering their ears.
Local Liberal candidates said Wednesday that they would work with the City of Ottawa on any proposal or funding request to restore the bridge for LRT.

Man sexually assaults dog owner after grabbing canine's genitals: Police
Kingston police say they’ve nabbed a 36-year-old man who was accused of grabbing a dog’s genitals and squeezing until it yelped with pain then groping its no-doubt horrified owner.
The victim reported that she was walking her dog in McBurney Park, northwest of downtown, at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday when the man approached and bent down as if to pet the pooch.
After hurting her dog, he then made “inappropriate” sexual comments to her and grabbed her buttocks. She fled and c -

Flaming truck full of pizzas melts eastbound Hwy 401 near Napanee
The eastbound Highway 401 near Napanee was expected to be closed into the evening Wednesday after a tractor-trailer loaded with frozen pizzas burned so hot it melted the roadway.
The truck crashed east of the Palace Road interchange at 4:30 a.m. caught on fire and “completely burned,” Napanee OPP reported.
The Loyalist Fire Department put out the flames but by late morning the OPP reported that the eastbound lanes were expected to be closed for at least eight hours because the f -
Reports say F-35 on the chopping block in the UK – more Eurofighter Typhoons to be purchased instead
News media in the United Kingdom are reporting that the government there is considering cutting the number of F-35s it intends to buy so it can save money. The Ministry of Defense in the UK has committed to 48 Lockheed Martin F-35s so far and hopes to buy 138 in total.
My Defense News colleague Andrew Chuter has reported that there is talk instead of buying the less costly Eurofighter Typhoons and that this is being looked at by the government’s defence review, officially known as the Defe -

Denley: This election won't solve the power bill problem
This Ontario election is said to be about change, but neither of the other major parties is promising to change the single worst policy instituted by the Kathleen Wynne government.
Instead, they say they will leave the so-called Fair Hydro Plan in place and double down by reducing power bills even more.
Ontario voters need to wrap their heads around how much this idiocy is going to cost us and the bogus justification for the plan, which artificially reduces our power bills by 25 per cent and bor -
