  Smiles have been few and far between on the front lines of the 550 fires currently burning across the province, but members of one B.C. Wildfire Service firefighting crew were smiling ear-to-ear Sunday after rescuing five puppies near Vernon.

  A Vernon man who was found not criminally responsible for beating his friend to death and dismembering the body has lost a bid for an absolute discharge.
