Dome Grown: Vancouver Whitecaps battle history, rivals in efforts to expand their audience
via vancouversun.comVancouver Whitecaps fans cheer on the team before last year’s MLS playoff game against the Seattle Sounders at B.C. Place, a full lower-bowl sellout.
It was 1979, September. The plane, a commercial jet, was subdued and quiet.
The Vancouver Whitecaps were winging their way back from New York, where they had dispatched Franz Beckenbauer and the star-studded Cosmos in an epic NASL semifinal before taking down the Tampa Bay Rowdies in a historic Soccer Bowl performance.

First collars installed on Alex Fraser Bridge to prevent ice falling on vehicles
via vancouversun.comCrews tested 14 collars on the Alex Fraser Bridge Friday during the storm that brought more than 20 centimetres of snow in some parts of Metro Vancouver.
The Ministry of Transportation says the collars, which drop down to dislodge any snow or ice that has accumulated on the cables, cleared about five centimetres of snow.
A look at the crew dropping chains on the #AlexFraser today. Snow/ice accumulations were more concentrated lower down the cables. #NorthDelta #RichmondBC #NewWest pic.twit -
Anthony Gismondi: Notable moments in Vancouver's wine festival history
via vancouversun.comThe Vancouver International Wine Festival turns 40 this week boasting a rich history of wine events and personalities that dates to 1979.
You remember 1979: Granville Island opened it doors to the public, the Whitecaps went from red and white to blue and white and won the NASL Soccer Bowl championship causing ABC broadcaster Jim McKay to famously tagged our city saying, “Vancouver must be like the deserted village right now,” with so many people watching the game on TV.

Vancouver Weather: Snowfall warning lifted Saturday after storm
via vancouversun.comVANCOUVER, B.C. – Saturday’s weather is expected to be much calmer than Friday, when a storm brought up to 20 centimetres of snow in some areas of Metro Vancouver. Environment Canada says there will be light snow in the morning, but that will change to a mix of sunshine and cloud, with highs of 4 C. Residents might want to get out and enjoy the snow while they can, as the agency predicts it will start raining tonight and continue on Sunday. It also looks like the cold snap migh -

This Week in History: 1896. A fiery newspaper editor clobbers CPR bigwig
via vancouversun.comIn 1896 John Houston of the Nelson Tribune wrote an article alleging the Canadian Pacific Railway’s traffic and operating divisions were “on the outs.”
According to Houston, the traffic division “know that Kootenay (mines) produce more tonnage than any other section of the province,” but were being stymied by the operating division, which was being run by men “who are more interested in townsite schemes and in the success of interconnecting lines than in -
Crazy8s Film Society back for Year 19 with women on top

Organizers say about 60 per cent of the 228 total submissions were from women. Those women ended up owning the competition as they made up 75 per cent of the top 12 and closed out the competition owning four of the final s -

Staffing is so low in some B.C. care homes that seniors can't shower or go to the toilet when they want
via vancouversun.comSo what difference would 22 minutes of extra care really make in the day of a senior living in one of B.C.’s care homes?
It might mean showering more than once a week. Or going to the toilet when they want. Or receiving more help at mealtimes.
It would mean regaining some dignity, advocates say.
“The difficulty is if you cannot choose how your day goes. It’s bad enough to lose your dignity when people have to help you toilet and bathe, but if you have no contr -

Opinion: Don’t kill ICBC, the goose that lays golden eggs
via vancouversun.comJust to be contrary, I’d like to suggest that the Insurance Corp. of B.C. — characterized so recently by Attorney General David Eby as a financial dumpster fire — is actually a valuable public asset, and one that British Columbians would embrace if they realized the extent of its contribution. The problem, which Eby only partly diagnosed, is that ICBC’s political masters have abused the corporation so badly that it’s in danger of losing all public support.

Michael Zwaagstra: More Canadian history needed in schools
via vancouversun.comLast fall, the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario demanded that John A. Macdonald’s name be stricken from all public schools in the province. More recently, Halifax’s city council voted to remove the Edward Cornwallis statue that had stood downtown since 1931. Both decisions were vigorously debated at the time and public opinion remains sharply divided. These are two separate events about two different individuals. via vancouversun.comRe: Pattullo Bridge to be replaced with province-owned, $1.4-billion bridge, Feb. 16.
I find it puzzling that the new Pattullo Bridge will not have high-occupancy-vehicle lanes. HOV lanes would aid the travel of transit buses over this key link over the Fraser River.
As well, considering the volume of slower-moving, heavy trucks on this bridge, a designated truck lane would help to smooth the flow of traffic.
I understand that, 30 years ago, the Alex Fraser Bridge had to be expanded to six lanes -
Editorial: Budget's estimated revenue may be wishful thinking
via vancouversun.com“A budget is more than revenue and expenses,” B.C. Finance Minister Carole James said in tabling the first New Democrat budget since 2001. “A budget is about people.”
With all due respect to the minister, a budget is by definition about revenue and expenses. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a budget as “a statement of the financial position of an administration (as of a nation) for a definite period of time based on estimates of expenditures during the period -
Brave New Work: Confronting the benefits — and costs — of the tech revolution
via vancouversun.comThe work we do — and the way we do it — is changing rapidly, and while these changes hold much promise, there is no guarantee that they will be all for the good. On the one hand, advances in robotics, artificial intelligence and communications have the potential to improve our quality of life. On the other, as the Brookfield Institute reports, 42 per cent of the tasks Canadians are currently paid to do can be automated using existing technology, disrupting industries and displacing w -

Rare blistering skin disease challenges 7-year-old Raquel
via vancouversun.com“Snow day” means a lot more to little Raquel Hultman than to most other seven-year-olds who enjoy frolicking in the white stuff like the late-winter dumping Metro Vancouver received on Friday.
The North Vancouver Grade 2 student was born with a skin disorder that causes her skin and organs to break out into large, painful blisters with the smallest amount of friction.
It’s impossible for Raquel to run around and play on a playground, where even the dust blowing around can scrat -

via vancouversun.comVICTORIA — For much of budget week, the New Democrats were pressed by the Greens to specify how big a market correction the government was seeking in the drive to make housing more affordable.
Green leader Andrew Weaver launched the exchange during question period Wednesday, the day after the release of the budget that pledged to “stabilize” the market.
“What does stabilization actually look like?” he challenged.
Answering was Housing Minister Selina Robinson. But i -

SPCA, Island animal advocates outraged after adopted pig butchered, eaten

Salut!: The Vancouver International Wine Festival turns 40
via vancouversun.comFour decades have come and gone since the first Vancouver wine festival opened its doors in 1979.
Believe it or not, the wildly successful wine bash is so old it began before the modern-day B.C. wine industry was born. It took until year five before the province’s wineries were invited to join the rest of the world to pour their wines inside the prestigious international tasting room.
There can be little doubt the festival has been the single biggest catalyst in turning Vancouver into an i -
Brian Minter: Colour your winter world with these garden stunners
via vancouversun.comAfter viewing the amazing and inspiring garden displays at the Northwest Flower and Garden Festival earlier this month, it’s hard not to get excited about the many trees and shrubs that provide stunning winter colour.
There’s a great selection available in many garden stores. Although they are a touch less hardy than many of our more traditional spring and summer-flowering trees and shrubs — many are rated zone six and seven — they are tough enough for most are -
