1984 story on sex-change 'debate' reveals dramatic shift
via vancouversun.comThe Vancouver Sun’s librarian recently dug up a 1984 feature I did on people who are transgender. The headline read, “People trapped in the wrong body. Sex-change stigma lingers.”
The story described the difficult, sometimes tragic, lives of several Vancouver transsexuals I interviewed, some of whom did not use their real names.
The 1984 story is a far cry from most of the enthusiastic articles I saw this week on the Internet. It highlights how the transgender discussion, -

Canadians evenly split over Alberta-B.C. bitumen battle
via vancouversun.comThe B.C. government’s stance on Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain expansion project is so compelling that half the country has taken its side.
The other half? It’s backing Alberta.
That perfect 50/50 split is among the main findings of a new public opinion poll by Angus Reid Institute on the high-stakes pipeline debate that has transformed into a trade war.
Shachi Kurl, an executive director at the institute, said the escalating dispute has come to dominate the national conv -

Surrey prepares for climate-change-related flooding
via vancouversun.comFor the past 45 years, Arnold Wieners’ family has farmed hundreds of acres of land in Surrey, which he hopes to be able to pass on to his children and grandchildren.
But, if something is not done to address the risk of flooding due to climate change from the nearby Serpentine River, Wieners’ property could be wiped out within 80 years.

Rio Theatre to host 'An Evening with Kevin Smith,' as filmmaker keeps his promise

The Hollywood filmmaker will be hosting “An Evening With Kevin Smith” at the Rio Theatre on March 30th, as he makes good on his promise to help save the popular East Vancouver venue from the threat of redevelopment.

Budget 2018: NDP's $5.5 billion in tax hikes — where the new money will come from
via vancouversun.comThe NDP will power its major spending initiatives with more than $5.5 billion in new taxes announced during its first year in government. That has made recipients of the new programs — parents with children, those looking for help with housing, people who hate paying the MSP — very happy. But where, exactly, will this new revenue come from over the next three years, and who — businesses or consumers or homebuyers/owners — will pay the biggest price?

Opinion: Vancouver’s public views must be protected
via vancouversun.comIn Vancouver we are blessed with an abundance of natural beauty that helps create our distinct urban setting envied by the world. Without question, the serene landscape and uninterrupted public views of the North Shore Mountains enhance quality of life, making Vancouver an exceptional city to call home. Opinion: Northeast False Creek Vancouver’s New Golden Apple
via vancouversun.comLast week, Vancouver City Council approved the False Creek North Plan. With this exciting decision, a lot comes together for Vancouver’s inner-city that has been in gestation for many years. Back in the early-1990s, when the overall plan for False Creek North was put together, we had great aspirations for the east end of False Creek but there were problems that had to be solved before the best ideas could possibly see the light of day.
Not the least of those problems was removal of the Geo -
Opinion: Governments must act now to protect migratory birds
via vancouversun.comMigratory birds lend grace and beauty to our lives. From the heron silently stalking fish at dawn, to the haunting call of the loon, to the majestic glide of swans to pond, these birds enrich us.
They also benefit us in practical ways. They control insects that damage farms and forests, and disperse seeds and pollinate plants. They are central to the diet and culture of Indigenous groups. Bird watching and waterfowl hunting contribute billions of dollars to Canada’s economy.
But the birds -

B.C. government says goal of budget taxes is a housing price drop
via vancouversun.comVICTORIA — Finance Minister Carole James says the goal of her budget’s new housing taxes is a downturn in the market and a drop in home prices, potentially making the market more affordable but also potentially putting some existing homeowners under water on their mortgages.
James said Wednesday that her new taxes on speculators, foreign buyers and homes valued at more than $3 million will, she hopes, lead to a correction in a housing market that has experienced steep price incr -
