Gatineau child, 3, dies of flu; mother warns 'it can happen to anyone'
Nancy Bouchard of Gatineau lost her three-year-old daughter, Charlotte, to the flu last week. Now the devastated mother is trying to spread the word that elderly people are not the only ones in danger from the virus.
Charlotte seemed fine on Monday morning of last week when she went to daycare, said Bouchard said in an interview Wednesday. That evening she seemed mildly unwell, but not in any real distress.
The following day, however, she had a fever and stayed home, Bouchard said. It got steadi -
Early winter storms risk burying city's cleanup budget
Budgeting for snow cleanup is a crapshoot since there’s no telling what Mother Nature will throw at the city.
The snowfall was relentless Wednesday as city plows tried to keep up with the accumulation. Such a heavy snowfall early in a budget year — a budget year for which a budget hasn’t even been approved yet — can drain the winter maintenance account faster than expected.
Cumberland Coun. Stephen Blais is the new chair of council’s transportation committee, which -

Hospital asks forgiveness after Indigenous smudging ceremony forced outside into -20 C cold
The Ottawa Hospital has asked for “understanding and forgiveness” after a counsellor was forced to wheel an Indigenous patient outside in Saturday’s bitter cold to perform a smudge ceremony when staff mistakenly told them the ritual couldn’t be performed on hospital property.
“What happened in this case was not right, and does not reflect our values or our smudging procedure,” the hospital said in a emailed statement Wednesday. “We are determined to work -
'It's how we pray': How smudging works
Smudging is a traditional custom shared by many North American Indigenous cultures and is intended to purify the body of illness or negative energy.
The smudge is a bundle of various herbs and plants, that may include tobacco, sage, cedar, sweetgrass, and lavendar, tied tightly together into a smudge stick. When lit in a smudge bowl, the mixture produces a sweet-smelling smoke that is wafted over the individual being smudged by waving a feather, fan or hand.
The smoke is said to chase away bad f -

Want to know about a helipad at Harrington Lake? Don't ask
Remember when there was talk about building a helicopter pad at the prime minister’s Harrington Lake retreat?
Details remain scant, even after an access-to-information request.
Just how scant? Let us show you.
The federal government maintains a website that shows what documents have been released under access requests. It shows that the National Capital Commission released 68 pages of documents on this topic. (The site never says who receives papers, but this seems to be a set of papers re -
Egan: Jack Kinsella, a kingly sports columnist when newspapers were king
As a young man, Jack Kinsella nearly became a Catholic priest. Instead he took to delivering sermons on the sports pages of the Ottawa Citizen, hearing confessions inside a two-point box, all the while wearing a bow tie and a dimpled smile.
Old columnists tend to bury each other, so after Kinsella died on the weekend, days shy of 98, we were flipping through his work, “Kinsella’s Corner,” to make him breathe again. In the 1950s and ’60s, in a city that was really an overg -

Jedwab: French university about more than dollars and demographics
The following is offered in rebuttal to the article “Ford was right to think twice about a French university,” which ran Jan. 5:
There has been much debate about the decision by the Doug Ford government to eliminate funding for the establishment of a French-language university in Ontario. Applauding the decision, Dr. Charles Shaver contends that it was motivated by the fiscal responsibility of the Ford administration, as the funds were simply not available.

Development of the new Civic campus of the Ottawa Hospital at the Central Experimental Farm site near Dow’s lake raises a question: How much do we want to remember and celebrate the scientific heritage of the old Dominion Observatory next door?

Segal: A modern Governor General is a good thing for Canada
Independent of the very different politics on both sides of our border with the United States, we Canadians sometimes forget that our constitutional underpinnings are also quite different.
Americans have a congressional republic, with en elected Head of State, and three branches – executive, congressional and judicial – each with its own powers. The system was born through armed revolution against the British in 1776. Canada has a constitutional parliamentary democracy which evolved -

OC Transpo has had more collision fatalities in 10 years than eight major Canadian transit systems combined
OC Transpo has experienced more on-board collision fatalities during the past 10 years than eight of the country’s largest transit systems combined.
And one road-safety expert says that’s something OC Transpo officials should pay attention to.
“OC Transpo’s record stands out because it is the same bus failing to stop in time in 2013 and in 2019,” said Ahmed Shalaby, the University of Manitoba engineering safety expert who has followed the OC Transpo bus crash closel -
Transpo union wanted LRT severance to be option for bus drivers with most seniority, arbitrator says no
An arbitrator has dismissed a grievance by the city’s transit union that, if allowed, would have added $23 million to the City of Ottawa’s severance bill for laying off 340 drivers when the LRT system opens.

Today's letters: Food waste, policing, infill and the bus crash
What restaurants can do about food waste
Re: Health Canada’s new food guide drops ‘milk and alternatives’ and favours plant-based protein, Jan. 23.
I would like to propose a new business model to reduce waste from restaurants:
1. Reduce portions to the recommended amount for an adult (or child if appropriate);

3. Offer free seconds;
4. No doggie bags;
5. Any leftovers from the kitchen are given to food banks etc.

But here’s the hustle: The government isn’t funding the tuition cut, so thi
