    The District of Sparwood is reviewing proposed updates to its Traffic Regulations Bylaw, which governs traffic movement, parking, and the use of municipal roads.
    The proposed bylaw represents a comprehensive update to the existing bylaw adopted in 1987 and includes new provisions related to truck routes and no truck routes on Michel Creek Road, from Industrial Rd #1 to GN Road.

    The District of Sparwood is developing a Development Cost Charge (DCC) Bylaw to help fund infrastructure needed to support community growth.
    Community members are invited to attend a Drop-In Public Information Session to learn about the proposed changes and ask questions of the project team taking place on Wednesday, June 24, at 6 p.m. at the Municipal Office located at 136, Spruce Avenue.

    Battle of the Bravest proceeds delivered
    Outside of the Sparwood Coal Miner Days activities this weekend, the Sparwood Fire Department was proud to present the cheques from the 2026 Battle of the Bravest Charity Hockey Game to our well deserving recipients.
    Angel Flight East Kootenay was presented with $21,891 and the Elk Valley Suicide Task Force received $3,671 (total event raised $25,562).

    Multiple smashed windows in Sparwood under investigation
    Elk Valley RCMP frontline officers respond to multiple calls of mischief to property between June 9 and June 10 in Sparwood.
    Suspects in the Sparwood area near the 400 block of Pine Avenue used what appeared to be a slingshot and metal ball bearings to smash windows in numerous homes and vehicles.
    If you have any information or surveillance footage available that could assist investigators in identifying the suspects please contact the Elk Valley RCMP during business hours at 250 425 6233.

    Sparwood Transfer Station re-opened after fire

    The Sparwood Transfer Station will re-open at 12:30 p.m. as the fire has been fully extinguished.
    The fire was in the construction/demolition area and a big thank you goes out to the Sparwood Fire Department, on site personnel and staff for their quick response.

    Coal Miner Days rolls June 8 to 14 in Sparwood
    Coal Miner Days returns with a week of community fun in Sparwood June 8 to 14.
    The annual community festival, held at venues around the town, celebrates local mining heritage with a parade, the Andrew Osbourne Memorial Ball Tournament, kids’ activities, a soapbox derby, markets, food trucks and cabaret dances.

    The mine rescue teams representing Elk Valley Resources (EVR) delivered an exceptional performance at the 68th annual B.C. Provincial Mine Rescue and First Aid Competition – with Line Creek Operations placing first overall in both the Surface Mine Rescue and Three-person First Aid categories.

    Elk Valley Lions once again nourish Kikomun Run
    Lions Club members from Elkford, Sparwood, Fernie and Sand Creek (Jaffray) served hotdogs, watermelon, juice and water to the hundreds of competitors at the annual Kikomun Run, Thursday, May 14.
    The event takes place at Surveyor’s Lake, and about 200 young athletes from elementary schools from the four communities take part each year.
    The Lions have been serving this free hot lunch for more than a decade and handed out approximately 900 hot dogs May 14.

    Man seriously injured in weapon attack in Sparwood
    On April 25, at approximately 8:22 a.m., Elk Valley Regional RCMP Detachment frontline officers, along with BC Ambulance, responded to a report of an unconscious man who appeared to have been violently attacked on Matevic Road in Sparwood.
    BC Ambulance transported the injured man directly to East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook for treatment of his injuries, and he is receiving further care.
    Three vehicles were identified by investigation as being involved and were seized by police.
