Snow, snow go away: Ottawa breaks record for snowiest January
A winter storm that began overnight and continued through the day Tuesday had the city snarled with vehicular collisions, transportation delays and non-stop snow removal.
The storm allowed Ottawa to claim January 2019 as the snowiest on record with more than 97 cm, besting the January 1999 record of 93 cm (though whether this is an achievement worth celebrating depends on who you ask).
All city staff were working 12-hour shifts, around the clock, in order to clear the roads, said Bryden Denyes, -

No honeymoon period for transit commission as council considers latest citizen appointments
City council is poised to appoint new citizen transit commissioners as the city begins a big year in which it will open the LRT system and try to quell the growing frustration about the resource-stretched bus service.
Out of the 92 applications for the transit commission received by the city, a city hall hiring panel has selected four people it believes will help the oversight body make important decisions about the transit service for the next four years.
Council on Wednesday will be asked to a -

Wondering when spring will arrive? Go wake up a bear and ask
But for the cruel winds of chance, Winnie-the-Pooh might have been best-known weather expert and prognosticator in North America, rather than an unreliable American rodent.
That, at least, is the inference one might draw from research done by Western University Canadian history professor Alan MacEachern.
MacEachern pored over Canadian newspapers from the late 1800s and determined that when they initially reported on what we now call Groundhog Day, in the waning years of the 19th century, th -

Cohen: The walls are slowly closing in on Donald Trump
Could the government shutdown in the United States be the beginning of the end of Donald Trump? Are we now seeing the confluence of forces that will, one way or another, assure his defeat or force his departure?
Trump will be a one-term president; either he goes in the election next year or he goes before. His future is in play now in a way that it was not before Christmas.
In his first two years, Trump’s approval rating moved reliably in a narrow band between 40 and 43 per cent. Nothing h -

Denley: Doug Ford won't be increasing class sizes any time soon. Here's why
Don’t worry about the Doug Ford government increasing class sizes or bringing merit back to teacher hiring in Ontario. The people who actually run the provincial education system will never allow it.
One can make a rational case for slightly larger class sizes, since studies around the world fail to show significant educational benefits from smaller classes. One could certainly condemn the practice of hiring teachers based on who has stuck around longest on the fill-in teacher list, rather -
