Forces chopper frees fisherman from fast-moving floe
A “perfect day” for some ice fishing ended up with a dramatic rescue Saturday as a Canadian Forces chopper plucked a fisherman from an ice floe in the middle of the St. Lawrence River.
The drama started at 10 a.m. when the Loyalist Fire Department was advised that an ice floe had broken off the west end of Amherst Island, carrying a fisherman with it.
Amherst Island is just west of Kingston in the St. Lawrence.
The man was fishing with a buddy when the ice broke off. The buddy was ab -

From O-Town to Bee City? There's a buzz about beekeeping in the capital
Dinah Robinson got busted for beekeeping last August.
Robinson had two beehives in her backyard at her Centretown home. She was reported by an unknown person for being “non-compliant” with the Ontario Bees Act. The provincial legislation requires that beehives be 30 metres away from the adjoining property line.
It’s well-known in the beekeeping world that while this regulation exists, it’s not enforced unless there is a complaint.
Like many urban beekeepers, Robinson tal -

Khan: It's 2019. Trudeau's gender agenda must be more than just talk
More than three years after Prime Minister Trudeau dropped one of his first Twitter-worthy catchphrases on gender equality, “Because its 2015” has come a long way. Now, in an election year, the Liberal government’s promise of promoting gender equality across Canada and the world is at a crossroads.
The stock-taking part is easy. From a gender-equal cabinet to the government’s contribution to establish the Partnership for Gender Equality; to the creation of the Department -

Today's letters: Military procurement is a mess
DND’s behaviour a kick in the gut
Re: “Tens of millions paid out due to bungled Canadian Forces procurement, but government says details are secret,” Jan 20.
Thank you for demonstrating again the value of investigative journalism.

McCuaig-Johnston: China risks losing some of its best friends
The detention in China of Canadians Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, and now the death penalty decision for Robert Schellenberg, have galvanized public attention. They have also prompted a reassessment among long-time friends of China, and professionals like myself who have worked over the years to help China develop its economic capacity and institutions. Discussions are taking place as to whether we have reached a tipping point, and some are now rethinking their engagement with China.

Editorial: The world is watching, China
At this stage, what sane western government would greenlight collaboration with China’s Huawei? Perhaps not Canada: This week, the federal government directed a $40-million grant to Huawei’s rival, Finnish telecom firm Nokia, for research on 5G wireless technology. Meanwhile, Canada continues a security review of Huawei’s place in the country’s fifth-generation mobile network.
Of course, $40 million is chump change to governments, and we’ve given grants to others in -
EGAN: We bought 133 double-deckers on the best advice. Was it a terrible mistake?
The city’s response to the horrendous crash at Westboro station has been a call for calm.
Before the three dead were even buried, in summary here is what OC Transpo was saying to the travelling public: the bus is safe, the transitway design is perfectly fine, the road is salted to a high standard and there is a rigorous process to become a driver, plus immediate remedial action taken if the driver exhibits any performance issue that affects safety.

First female mayor was also Ottawa's most colourful
Publicly, she was described as a “relentless and devoted war horse,” a “human dynamo,” “explosive” and a “little package of dynamite.” Privately, there were likely many who would have had far less kind things to say.
