The witness threatened to “f—“ a prosecutor’s mother, said he wanted to assault the Crown and accused prosecutors of setting him up before the charges were ultimately stayed this week.

City spends $750K in emergency repairs related to tornado damage
The City of Ottawa has spent about $750,000 to repair four of its buildings as “emergency” work needed after the tornadoes last September.
The costs could go up as the city continues to assess damage to its assets.
Infrastructure services director Alain Gonthier told council in a memo Thursday that four buildings have received repairs: the Dunrobin Community Hall had roofing and siding damage, Galetta Community Hall had roof damage, Trend-Arlington Community Building had roof and sit -
Egan: Double-decker buses did poorly in 2007 winter road test
An OC Transpo double-decker performed so poorly during winter testing in 2007 that the driver felt it was unsafe to even continue.
The alarming conclusion is buried in an 189-page report by the National Research Council as the city was evaluating the fitness of the UK-made buses in cold climates. Over time, OC Transpo would buy 133 of the $1-million buses, now the subject of intense scrutiny after a second disastrous crash last week.
“This bus has not yet been deployed into a North America -

Mark Elliot (1953-2019): Ottawa DJ legend went from rehab to a new career on People Helping People
If you were an Ottawa high school kid in the 1970s and ’80s, Mark Elliot was your music god, the “Golden Voice” spinning the top hits at CFRA or crosstown rival CFGO.
He was the city’s pre-eminent DJ in a pre-internet, pre-MTV era when AM radio set the city’s musical taste. But it was what he did live on air the night of July 16, 1986, that cemented his legend.
“CFRA with Peter Gabriel giving us Sledgehammer,” Elliot told his listeners. “And I -

Carver: A moment to speak out against gender violence
When you are small, a lot doesn’t make sense. But then, time and education pull back the lens, bring things into focus, and mysteries are suddenly made clear.
When I was young, my mom put up with things that didn’t make sense. She tolerated things that I couldn’t comprehend, including physical assault. Fights that started over dirty dishes culminated in fists.
My sister and I breathed shallowly when voices were raised. We would slip into the same bunk, cuddling instead of sleep -

A Toronto-area trucking firm and a chemical company have been fined $250,000, plus a victim surcharge of $62,500, in connection with a 2017 crash on Highway 401 that spilled thousands of litres of dangerous acid, killing the driver who was doused in the material.

Adam: Westboro bus crash – back off and let the police do their work
The OC Transpo double-decker bus crash at Westboro Station that left three dead and 23 injured has traumatized the city. And coming five years after another double-decker was involved in a Via train collision that took six lives, it is easy to see why people are demanding quick answers. You should not leave work to go home on public transit and end up dead or injured. It shouldn’t happen.
But the growing demands for an independent investigation into the crash, especially from politicians, -

Focus on bus shelter roof structure
Re: Why city chose to use double-decker buses, Jan. 14.
Your history of deliberations by the city on introducing the use of double-decker buses from 2007 to 2011 lacked reference to one important consideration: the projecting roof structure of the Westboro bus shelter.
This is one of the originally designed shelters remaining on the Transitway since its inauguration, but it appears that no thought was given to the possibility of double-decker bus impacts to su -

Antiques: With Group of Seven influence, artist's work is rarely seen
