Carleton University has rescinded the honorary degree it awarded in 2009 to disgraced Ottawa fertility specialist Dr. Norman Barwin.
The university’s senate, according to a statement from Carleton, decided on Friday to take back the prestigious honour effective immediately “on the basis of incontrovertible evidence of malpractice.”
It is yet another blemish on a career and professional reputation reduced to ruins.
Carleton’s decision comes five years after Barwin admitted

Reevely: Veterans deserve better than petty politics, Royal Canadian Legion leader tells Ontario parties
The way Ontario politicians are treating veterans and their causes in this provincial election campaign is “abhorrent,” the Royal Canadian Legion’s national director says.
“Recent opinion columns, media reports and politicking have prompted us to say ‘enough is enough’,” Brad White wrote in a letter to this newspaper. “It is deplorable to see veterans being used as political pawns at election time.”
Veterans need real help the provincial gove -
Scanlan: Painted masks of the brain injured tell the story within
Those suffering from brain injury know it as an invisible affliction.
For brain injury awareness month, the masks are off and on display. At Ottawa’s city hall on Friday, some 45 masks, colourfully painted by individuals suffering from brain trauma were shown by the Brain Injury Association of the Ottawa Valley. Personal written details were attached to each mask.
“It’s enlightening to see the stories behind the face,” said Wendy Charbonneau, president of the BIAOV. &ldqu -
Officer in 'imminent danger' when he killed homicide suspect, SIU rules
An Ottawa police tactical officer who fatally shot a fleeing and armed homicide suspect in the head was justified in using lethal force against an “imminent danger,” the civilian police watchdog has found.
The Special Investigations Unit has cleared Const. Aaron Reichert of any wrongdoing in the death of 31-year-old Raymond Alliman in June 2017. Alliman had first shot and injured Bun Sim, then moments later fired again, killing Sim’s best friend, Terrence Phillips, in an early -
Jimmy Wise will plead not guilty to murder charge in cold case, lawyer says
Retired mechanic Jimmy Wise has served notice that he will contest the murder charge laid against him after a years-long cold case investigation by the Ontario Provincial Police.
Wise’s defence lawyer, Ian Carter, told reporters Friday that the 75-year-old, who has been in conflict with the OPP for most of his adult life, will plead not guilty.
It means Wise’s epic legal odyssey — he once sued the OPP for defamation after being publicly identified as a serial murder suspect &md -
208 lives saved in shipwreck, 109 years later, Almonte hero finally gets his gravestone
On Sunday afternoon, in a quiet cemetery outside of Almonte, a dead, forgotten hero will live again in stone.
A monument to George Eccles, who helped save more than 200 lives during a shipwreck in 1909, will be unveiled at the St. Paul’s Anglican Church cemetery on Wolf Grove Road.
The Almonte native was the first radio telegrapher to die at sea — bravely sticking to his post, summoning help — after the SS Ohio, a 340-foot steamer, struck a rock off the coast of British Co -

Two men stabbed, one man arrested in Gatineau
A 29-year-old man has been charged with stabbing two men in unrelated attacks that both took place on May 11.
A little before 9 a.m. that day, one man was stabbed at a house on Garneau Street. He suffered wounds to his arms and legs, but managed to stagger around the corner to a business on Eddy Street and ask for help.
Witnesses at the scene of the stabbing chased away the man who assailed him, police said. The victim did not know his attacker.

Here's how much it costs to run 24 Sussex, even when the prime minister doesn't live there
You might pass 24 Sussex Drive and say to yourself: “I wonder what it costs to keep that place running?”
So we found out — and it’s a bundle.
Some ordinary household bills for the official residence of the prime minister, the one that’s not been lived in since the 2015 federal election, were released by the National Capital Commission through an access-to-information request.
They show how the notoriously drafty old house sucks up energy — and money. -
Gormley: Canada is bad at helping citizens abroad – that's a problem
The auditor general has found that it takes months for Global Affairs staff to formally report instances of torture abroad, and does not always contact those who have been arrested or detained. This is the kind of finding that ought to be reported in 48-point font, or at least in ALLCAPS, or perhaps accompanied by a man from 12th-century England with a bugle.
Taking a more than a month to do anything generally indicates that you feel you are extending a favour rather than fulfilling a duty. But -

The Northwest Passage, without Stan Rogers? Singer David Newland's concert offers different take on the North
Northwest Passage in Story and Song
with David Newland and friends
8 p.m. June 8, Arts Court Theatre, 2 Daly Ave.
Tickets: $25, available at artscourt.ca
At the mention of the Northwest Passage, what comes to mind?If you’re at all musically inclined, you’re probably already humming the iconic ballad by the late, great folksinger Stan Rogers. His Northwest Passage is a classic a cappella story-song that captures the allure of exploring unknown territory.

King's Singers to return to Ottawa for Christmas concerts in 2018
The five-decades-old British vocal ensemble the King’s Singers will return to Ottawa in mid-December 2018 for their third Christmas concert here in a decade.
On Dec. 14 and 15, the vocal sextet will perform in Dominion-Chalmers United Church, the downtown church recently acquired by Carleton University. Dawson: Why I'm no longer on 'Team Save 24 Sussex'
At one point, I was wholeheartedly on Team Preserve 24 Sussex. History matters, and leaves its imprint: The feet that shuffled there, the food and drink spilled, whatever, a building isn’t just (often) where history happens but also is history.
We all know this innately. That’s why it was genuinely shameful to repair the bullet damage in corridors of Parliament from the Oct. 22 attack.
Another Château Laurier redesign proposal was unveiled Thursday; the evidence -

Antiques: Art Deco heats up value of fireplace screen
Q I purchased this fireplace screen and fender at a local flea market for just over $100. The screen measures 58 cm wide, including side embellishments. The label on the inside of bumper reads ‘Hearth Furniture, Made in England, Trade Mark L & M.’ The blue highlights are a matt finish. Even though I don’t have a fireplace I was compelled to buy it because of the art deco design. How did I do and thank you.

Music and Beyond's 2018 festival brings Shakespeare, string quartets, puppetry and more to Ottawa
Everything from leading international string quartets, to a Grammy-winning tango maestro, to the premiere of a made-in-Ottawa opera for puppets will be among the eclectic highlights of Ottawa’s ninth annual Music and Beyond Festival July 5 to 18.
Artistic and executive director Julian Armour’s event, which takes classical music as its starting point but embraces significantly more than that, will stage 75 concerts over its 15 days, principally at Ottawa churches but also at -
Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry candidates discuss poverty, social issues
FINCH — While there were a few jabs at their rivals’ respective platforms and history among the three major parties involved, the all candidates question-and-answer period held in Finch on Wednesday night was a civil affair.
Candidates were invited to South Nation Conservation Authority to discuss social issues from poverty to the lack of essential services in the counties to affordable housing.
Candidates were asked what they would aim for as an initiative for the reduction of pover -
Here's how much it costs to run 24 Sussex Drive, even when the prime minister doesn't live there
You might pass 24 Sussex Drive and say to yourself: “I wonder what it costs to keep that place running?”
Showers, sticky 27 C Friday but Saturday looks splendid
Just one more sultry, soggy day and then a beautiful June weekend is in store.
Friday’s forecast is for mainly-cloudy skies, a 70 per cent chance of afternoon or nighttime showers with the risk of a thunderstorm and a high of 27 C that will feel more like a sticky 32. Winds become northerly at 20 km/h by late afternoon. The low is 12 C.
Skies should begin to clear Saturday morning and the temperature climbs to 23 C with a UV index of 8 or very high. Overnight, expect clear skies and 11 C. -
Reevely: Eastern Ontario sees healthy three-party battles for the first time in a generation
Regardless whether they win any seats in Eastern Ontario, the threat the surging New Democrats pose to the Liberals and Progressive Conservatives here is disrupting the political balance in our region.
It’s a healthy change. Politics should be messier than they have been here. Politicians should be more frightened for their jobs. Voters should have more options.
Even in the 2003 election, when Ernie Eves’ Progressive Conservatives lost 35 seats and the Liberals won their first majori -

Reevely: Wynne makes appeal to francophones as Ontario campaign enters final desperate week
When Kathleen Wynne rolled up to the Mouvement d’implication francophone d’Orléans building in Ottawa’s east end — more than an hour later than planned, after her charter plan had mechanical trouble in Toronto — she had a job to do.
Glengarry-Prescott-Russell is in danger, with two-term Liberal MPP Grant Crack retiring; in Orléans, Marie-France Lalonde has shot up the cabinet ranks in her first term, but is facing a serious challenge from Tory Cam -
Cotler, MacKay and Kara-Murza: Canada must honour Russian dissident
In February 2012, at the height of the protests that swept Russia following a rigged parliamentary election, Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov came to Toronto and Ottawa to make an appeal to Canada’s political leaders.
Contrary to customary slurs by Kremlin propaganda, he did not ask Canada (or anyone else in the West) for help in fighting for democracy in Russia.
What he and other Russian democracy activists wanted Canada to do was to stop, in effect, enabling corruption and human r -
