Names for 12 foals, which had to start with the letter ‘P’, were chosen in a public contest.

'You don't need us anymore': Ottawa antique dealers say business is dying
When Dee Legault and her husband opened their antique store in Old Ottawa South 30 years ago, the market was booming.
Logan Antiques was one of nearly a dozen stores along Bank Street — Ottawa’s “antique alley” — that attracted thousands of buyers each year to its regal 19th century furniture and timeless silverware dining sets.
Now, antique dealers in Ottawa say their carefully curated collections are falling unnoticed as millennials, who prefer brand names and lar -
Musical Ride mounts in the making and the manager who dreamed of raising them
P is for Poppy, Partner, Pixie, Pax, Pace and Pride.
Not to mention Pascal, Phantom, Prince, Patriot, Puck and Penny.
Those are the winning names from kids across Canada for a dozen of the foals born this spring at the Pakenham farm, where the RCMP breeds Hanoverians as future Musical Ride steeds.
The farm’s new manager Karen Ryan was only seven herself when her mom first took her to meet the spring foals at Remount Depot, minutes away from the family’s dairy farm.

Argument over $40 escalated quickly to fatal stabbing, witness testifies in Ethier trial
It was an argument over as little as $40 that escalated until Brandon Ethier stormed out of his bedroom and stabbed his roommate, Joshua Briere, according to testimony Thursday from an eyewitness to his friend’s death.
“They got into an argument. … I knew it was over money,” Daulton Boudreau, 24, told the jury in Ethier’s second-degree murder trial. “Josh was asking Brandon to borrow money. … I can’t remember if it was $40 or $60… Josh did -
Suspect in Parkdale Ave. robbery claimed to have a gun, say police
Robbery detectives are asking the public to help them identify a suspect accused of holding up a Parkdale Avenue convenience store while claiming to be armed with a gun.
The man walked into the store at Scott Street at about 11:38 p.m. on April 5. He asked for cigarettes but as the clerk handed them over, he demanded cash, police allege. The clerk handed it over and the man fled on foot, heading east on Scott Street.
The suspect is described as black, about 5-9 and 180 pounds with a shaved or ba -

In attempt to win over critics, new Château Laurier design includes more limestone
The owner of the Château Laurier has filed a new design for its proposed addition, attempting to make the contemporary wing complement, not overwhelm, the historic hotel.
A heritage brief submitted with the package at city hall this week says “limestone fins” on the north-facing side, fronting Major’s Hill Park, will break up the height of the building, which is proposed to be one storey shorter than the previous iteration. The addition is now proposed to be seven storeys -

Naked and arrested in Aylmer
Gatineau police were quick to deduce that two break-ins were connected early Tuesday. The fact that the intruder was naked both times was a strong clue.
Police allege the naked man broke into a home on Grands Châteaux Street at about 3 a.m. but ran away as soon as the woman who lives there woke up.
Police said the man seemed surprised by the woman.
About 45 minutes later, it was the same story in a home on Cherbourg Street: A naked man allegedly breaking in, and again confronted by a woman -
Today's letters: Mosaïculture, Laura Secord and Ontario votes
Mosaïculture will be too priceyRe: Art of topiary to take off again, May 30
Mosaïculture was a wonderous hit with family and friends last year. It was a must-see and do for all our visitors. The one drawback in 2017 was parking availability and expense.
The landscape is more complicated this year. With entrance fees and parking fees, this outing will not be happening this year. A review of last year’s numbers and visits using this year’s prices comes out to about a little s -

New Château Laurier design includes more limestone, in hopes to win over critics
The owner of the Château Laurier has filed a new design for its proposed addition, attempting to make the contemporary wing complement the historic hotel.
A heritage brief submitted with the package at city hall this week says “limestone fins” on the north-facing side, fronting Major’s Hill Park, will break up the height of the building.
One of the knocks against the previous design was that the glassy facade sullied the vista to the limestone and copper hotel. Including -
Former St. Pat's teacher faces more sexual assault charges
A high school teacher who has been charged with sexually assaulting a young girl at a local Catholic school now faces more charges.
In March, Ottawa police charged 55-year-old Robert Lavergne with sexual assault and sexual exploitation for incidents involving a girl under 18 that allegedly took place between 2014 and 2016.
He was teaching at St. Patrick’s High School in Alta Vista at the time.
On Thursday, police said the Ottawa man faces more charges, including three additional counts of -

Spotlight is a weekly look at some of the people who are part of the Ottawa area’s arts community. This week, Bruce Deachman talks with artist, performer and glassblower Lauretta Peters.
“I feel I’ve always been a closet pyromaniac, but this is a way you can do it without seeming crazy. I also do some fire-performing — spinning things that are lit on fire. It’s not glass-related at all, but I started them at around the same time. I just have some props — hula& -

The Ontario Provincial Police have charged a 75-year-old Winchester man with first-degree murder in a decade-old cold case.
The OPP arrested James Henry “Jimmy” Wise on Thursday at a retirement residence in Winchester and charged him with first-degree murder in the death of Raymond Collison.

Johnstone: Ontario parties must help trans and gender-diverse people
It’s 2018. Ontario has had human rights legislation for trans and gender-diverse individuals for almost six years. But despite these legal protections, the everyday realities of trans and gender-diverse communities are still rife with violence and discrimination.
It is time – we’re not far from an election – for Ontario’s political parties to stop just talking about inclusion, and start acting on it.
While data is desperately lacking on the state of trans communitie -

Azhar Ali Khan: Reflecting on my Ramadan celebrations
Muslims view Ramadan as a holy month when they fast from sunrise until sunset to remember God and follow His commands that include kindness to all, particularly family, neighbours, the weak and animals, good behaviour, patience and giving charity.
It is a month to bring you closer to the Creator through fasting and compassion for people and to animals.
I’ve observed Ramadan in several places – from cities in the United States where I was the only Muslim, to the grand mosque in Mecca -

Leadership key election issue in Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes
This story first appeared in the Brockville Recorder on May 25, 2018.
GANANOQUE – As the provincial election campaign reaches its halfway point, the question of party leadership was the elephant in the room at this all-candidates meeting Wednesday, May 23.
Asked why their leader would be best for the province, the local candidates alternatively praised and defended their leaders or took potshots at the others.
Conservative candidate Steve Clark said Doug Ford always has been approachable, -

Tanker still stuck 'like a boot in mud' in seaway at Morrisburg
The Chem Norma remained stuck “like a boot in mud” Thursday, two days after she ran aground on the St. Lawrence Seaway at Morrisburg.
The efforts of the tugs Ocean K. Rusby and Ocean Pierre Julien Wednesday weren’t enough to free her.
Officials have now come up with a plan to “wiggle” her free to break the suction of the boggy bottom, St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corp. spokesman Andrew Bagora said.
