Cabbies don't prove 'bad faith' in city's new taxi bylaw, judge rules
Uber and Lyft can live on in Ottawa.
A Superior Court judge Wednesday released her decision on a judicial challenge of the City of Ottawa’s bylaw governing taxis and private transportation companies. Justice Maria Linhares de Sousa concluded the Ottawa taxi union didn’t prove that the bylaw exhibits bad faith or an illegal bonus scheme, as alleged by the cabbies.
The taxi union asked the court to quash the vehicle-for-hire bylaw and reinstate the former taxi-only licensing regim -
Caroline Mulroney's 'star' power helps rally Ottawa PC campaigns
The Progressive Conservatives sent Caroline Mulroney to the nation’s capital Wednesday hoping to rally support around their local provincial candidates ahead of the June 7 election.
At noon, a couple dozen supporters of Ottawa South PC candidate Karin Howard waited patiently for Mulroney, the party hopeful in York-Simcoe and former leadership candidate, to show up at the Walkley Road campaign office and talk about the election over sandwiches and veggies.
She arrived about 45 minutes late, -
A sneak peek at Mosaïculture Gatineau 2018
After a hugely successful inaugural season last summer, the team behind MosaïCanada 150 have their work cut out for them to build similar hype for the horticultural exhibit’s second iteration in Gatineau.
“The challenge is to present something more than last year,” Lise Cormier said Tuesday. Cormier is the vice-president of Mosaïcultures Internationales de Montréal, the non-profit behind the garden dreamscape that drew 1.3 million visitors to Jac -

Officer who hit and choked hospital patient docked pay, ordered to take class
An Ottawa police officer who hit a handcuffed hospital patient in the neck and then choked him for not being quiet will forfeit five days’ pay and attend a class on emotional intelligence, according to a decision handed down last week.
Const. Greg Thomson pleaded guilty in April to one count of unlawful or unnecessary exercise of authority for unjustifiably grabbing the man and choking him in January 2017.
Thomson, an Ottawa police officer since 2006, responded to a 911 call and found a ma -

Denley: Doug Ford has a plan – but not all the numbers
Progressive Conservative leader Doug Ford’s two main opponents have had some fun claiming he has no platform, although he has offered a substantial of mix of tax cuts, new spending and expenditure reductions throughout the campaign.
Wednesday, Ford finally released a document that pulls it all together.
What’s missing is the important page that shows how Ford’s plan will be phased in and how it affects the bottom line. That’s a big omission, and probably not a smart one, -

Today's letters: Cycling injuries are a sad reality
Health spending is out of controlRe: Pricey beer is worth the cost of health care, May 28
In response to the letter about the price of beer, gas and apple crisp in Canada versus the United States.
I don’t think Canadians mind paying extra to support our health care – I think people are overwhelmed by how much we are paying extra. The fact is, it’s gone too far, and every time the government wants more, they bring out the health care boogeyman.
It’s time to get this under -

Speed a potential factor in crash that killed two in Gatineau Park
Speed is being eyed as a likely factor in a crash that killed a man and woman in their 20s overnight in Gatineau Park.
First responders found them unresponsive after their car went off the road and crashed into trees on the Champlain Parkway near Huron Lookout at about 12 a.m. Wednesday. They were pronounced dead at the scene soon after.

House Works: Tips for a great new roof
Most houses in Canada have asphalt shingle roofs, and June is an excellent month to have new shingles installed. With hot weather on the way, shingles will seal down reliably later on in the summer sun. But June itself is also not usually so hot that the shingles will be soft and easily damaged underfoot during installation.
Because you’re interested in getting the best possible asphalt shingle roofing job, there are details you need to discuss with your roofer. As with any other professio -
Denley: Doug Ford – by the numbers
Progressive Conservative leader Doug Ford’s two main opponents say he has no platform. That could easily leave voters with the mistaken impression that Ford is refusing to tell us what his government would do. That’s far from the case.
Ford has outlined a series of major proposals, but what’s missing, so far, is the important page that shows how Ford’s plan for tax cuts, new spending and expenditure reductions will be phased in and how it affects the bottom line.

Sunny scorcher in store as mercury hits 30 C
It’s no record-breaker but get ready for the summer of 2018’s first scorcher.
If the mercury on Wednesday reaches the forecast of 30 C it will be the hottest day since last September. And it will feel even hotter with a Humidex of 36 and a UV index of 9 or very high. The overnight low will only reach 19 C.
A typical high for the end of May is 22 C but Environment Canada’s record high for May 30 was 33.2 C in 2016.

Reevely: Lies, damned lies, and the major parties' hydro plans
The Ontario New Democrats’ very bad plan for electricity will make consumer hydro bills shoot up, the Progressive Conservatives charged Tuesday. As opposed to the Tories’ very good plan, which will make bills shoot up later.
“Today we want to shine light on the consequences of the NDP’s real hydro policies and how they will hurt you,” Nepean Tory candidate Lisa MacLeod said in Toronto, with fellow incumbent MPP Todd Smith. They’re the Tories’ former and -

MISSISSAUGA — One of two suspects wanted in connection with an explosion that injured 15 people at an Indian restaurant may be a woman, contrary to earlier reports, police said Tuesday.
Peel Regional Police originally said both suspects seen on video entering the Bombay Bhel restaurant on Hurontario near Eglinton last week were men, but new video evidence and witness input suggests at least one of the suspects could be female, Supt. Rob Ryan said.

'It makes me feel awful … I loved him,' says father on trial for killing son
Three weeks before John Mcrae knifed his son to death, he feared his drunken son so much that he slept with a baseball bat for protection.
The old ex-con, now 73, could once handle himself with his fists, but these days he gets winded from a flight of stairs.
So he kept a bat close by for fear his son, Michael, would make good on his threats to kill “the rotten old bastard.”
And on the evening of July 7, 2017, after another day of drinking and fighting with his son over ren -
