Man arrested after raid nets drugs, guns, police say
One man was arrested in a Friday morning raid at an Elmira Drive residence where police said they found large quantities of illegal drugs and ammunition.
The guns and gangs unit, along with the tactical team and the Direct Action Response Team executed the raid in the 2100 block of Elmira on Friday morning.
Inside the residence, police said they found several bags of 9mm Luger ammunition and one bag of .38 Special hollow point bullets. Police seized two handgun laser sight kits, two high-capacit -
Fewer advance polls, but speedier voting, Elections Ontario promises
Voters will have fewer places to vote in advance polls for Ontario’s 2018 election, but Election Ontario says new technology will speed voting and cut lineups on election day, June 7.
Some electoral districts will have fewer than half the number of locations for advanced polls, part of a revamping of the election that also added 14 new seats to the Legislature.
Ottawa Centre, for example, will have four advance poll locations, down from 11 in 2014. Ottawa West-Nepean goes from eight to fou -

Reevely: Intrigue consumes Tory campaign in Glengarry-Prescott-Russell
The provincial Liberal candidate in Glengarry-Prescott-Russell is a former Tory who quit the party because of the way Patrick Brown ran it. He’s now being helped by another former Tory who quit the party because of the way Doug Ford is running it.
Most places, with power in sight, the Progressive Conservatives are putting a really brave face on in the name of party unity. In this riding, not so much.
Rachel Theriault, a Progressive Conservative volunteer who’d been working for Tory c -

Use of dangerous 'purple heroin' increasing in Ottawa
A powerful opioid mixture, known for its purple colour and Play-Doh-like consistency, is becoming increasingly prevalent in the city’s drug supply.Known as “purple heroin” — more informally by its street name, “purple pebbles” — the substance generally comprises a cocktail of heroin, fentanyl and morphine. In some cases, carfentanil, which is 100 times more powerful than plain fentanyl, is also included in the mix.

Ottawa teacher pleads guilty to sexually abusing teen boy
An elementary school teacher who had sexual encounters with a former student in parking lots, sent him sexual pictures on social media and told the boy she wanted to leave her husband for him has pleaded guilty to her crime.
The years-long ordeal has left the teen, now 19, broken, suicidal and struggling to make sense of sexual abuse he once thought of as a relationship, his family told the court.
Kyla Cowan-Wilson pleaded guilty Friday to a single count of sexual assault. As a result, charges o -

A bridge too old: Harmer Avenue pedestrian bridge slated for demolition, then replacement
After crossing the Harmer Avenue pedestrian bridge from her home on the south side of the Queensway, Tiana Benoit stops at the north end of the bridge and waits. It’s just before 8:30 on a bright Monday morning, and close to 20 minutes remain before the final morning bell at Fisher Park Public School will call her inside.
Moments later, Sammy Siscoe comes bounding up the bridge’s decrepit concrete steps from Helena Street and greets Tiana. The two 12-year-olds are best friends and sc -

Editorial: Tied-up paramedics a symptom of a larger problem
Ottawa paramedics are spending a troubling amount of time waiting for patients to be moved over into the care of local hospitals – and a fix must be found.
All told, paramedics spent more than 37,000 hours last year waiting in emergency rooms. The issue is that when paramedics arrive, if there isn’t a nurse or bed available for the patient, paramedics must stay with them until there is.
It makes sense; a patient who arrives by ambulance requires a certain level of care and can& -
Dawson: Why police concerns about cost of legal pot might be fair
How, exactly, is legalized marijuana going to lead to increased policing costs? It doesn’t make sense. Police police illegal things. So, when a thing is no longer illegal, presumably police can stop policing it, therefore, costs should go down. Right?
This week, some Ontario police chiefs complained that there wasn’t going to be enough federal funding available to cover increased policing costs associated with legalization. So far, the federal government has promised nearly $30 -

Two 18-year-old men face human trafficking charges in Renfrew
A pair of 18-year-old men have been charged with human trafficking, provincial police say.
The charges follow an investigation that began after a teenaged female victim came forward in March to report attempts were made to lure her into prostitution.
Liam Coyne, of Renfrew, and Logan O’Brien, of Ottawa, were each charged with attempting to procure a person under the age of 18 to provide sexual services.
O’Brien is also charged with one count of breach of a probation order.  -
Fourth inmate charged in Ottawa jailhouse homicide
An inmate who police allege served as lookout during a jailhouse homicide has been charged with murder, this newspaper has learned.
Yaheya Benamiar, 19, is now the fourth Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre inmate to be charged with first-degree murder for the beating death of accused killer Marco Michaud.
Michaud, 36, was pronounced dead May 4 after he was taken off life support. He suffered extensive head injuries in the April 11 beating, which left him brain-dead. He was put into an in -
Activist Lynda Kitchikeesic faces uncertain future after emergency surgery
“Please pray for me. I am going through a lot right now. Tonight I am frightened.”
Lynda Kitchikeesic’s Facebook post last Saturday presaged the emergency medical surgery that the Ottawa activist and volunteer underwent on Wednesday when, near death with her kidney function at just four per cent, a dialysis line was inserted directly into her heart via her neck.
“I have had no intention of doing dialysis and went away to Florida cheerfully prepared to die,” she wrot -
Today's letters: Solutions hard to find on Israel and Palestine
Extremists prevent lasting peace between Israel, PalestineRe: U.S. embassy move won’t help peace process, May 16
In my view, both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian long-standing conflict have legitimate grievances and aspirations, and both sides are held hostage by their deeply and rigidly entrenched extremists’ diametrically opposing views.
The bomb has been ticking louder and louder, at least since Israel’s foundation in 1947. In my view, the respective extremists’ views -
Safe Boating Week kicks off Saturday: Wear a life-jacket!
After a dubious record year of boating fatalities in 2017, Ontario Provincial Police and the Canadian Safe Boating Council are redoubling their calls urging boaters to wear a life-jacket or flotation device.
Boating-related deaths hit an eight-year high in 2017 with 31 people losing their lives, up from 23 the year before.
And more than three-quarters of the victims over the two years, 42 out of 54, were not wearing, or not properly wearing a flotation device.
Simply falling overboard remai -
What's open and what's closed this Victoria Day long weekend
The Canadian way to canonically spend your May long weekend (which celebrates the birthday of Queen Victoria, but unofficially is more about kicking off the summer) is to get out of the city.
For anyone spending time in town, here’s a rundown of what’s open and what’s closed in Ottawa this weekend.
Retail, food, and alcohol
The Rideau Centre will stick to its regular hours on Saturday and Sunday (9:30 a.m. – 9 p.m. and 11 a.m. – 6 p.m., respectively), but -
Ottawa man convicted of biting off drinking buddy's ear loses appeal
Stephen Lawrence woke up one morning and couldn’t remember what happened the night before.
So he texted the pal he’d been drinking with saying he couldn’t recall coming home and hoped he hadn’t been a “super a–hole last night.”
His likely former friend texted back that Lawrence had bitten off his ear and he might lose it — which weeks later, he did.
“O f— me,” Lawrence replied that morning in November 2015.

Ottawa kitchen and bath award winners trend toward modern design
There was a refreshing variety and return of colour at this year’s Ottawa kitchen and bath awards.
From robin’s egg blue to wood-grain cabinets, creative tile choices and statement pendants, Ottawa homeowners took some chances and expressed their personality in the entries vying for trophies at the Design Excellence Awards gala held by the Ottawa Chapter of the National Kitchen and Bathroom Association (NKBA) May 5.
