Antiques: Value lights up with this old cigar chest
Q. This chest has been in my family for about four generations. The story is it came over with my great grandfather from Ireland in 1842. It is 51 long x 36 cm wide, and about 15 cm (20 x 14 x 6 inches) off the ground and carved on all sides. Inside there are four heavy glass sections – each one 18 long by 11 cm wide and 5 cm deep (7 x 4.5 2 inches) – contained by a spring- loaded glass partition which lifts up. The brass lock strip is stamped “Patent Double Lever” and a -
Evicted residents demand more time from developer to find new homes
The clangs of progress hammer loud and long across the street from Dalal Ayoob’s Sandalwood Crescent townhouse off of Heron Road, as cranes, trucks and workers move heavy building materials into place. When they’re finished, in June 2019, Timbercreek Communities, the developer, will cut the ribbon and open doors at its HG7 project — three six-storey apartment buildings that will boast nearly 350 units.
Ayoob may not be around to see the project’s completion, however. She -
Paramedics held hostage by hospitals: 37,000 hours spent waiting to transfer patients to ER
Paramedics in Ottawa are being held hostage by hospitals that take way too long to transfer patients who arrive at emergency rooms by ambulance, a senior city bureaucrat charged Thursday.
“The emergency rooms are a disaster and there’s no excuse,” said Anthony Di Monte, general manager of emergency and protective services.
His blunt assessment was based on years of frustration as paramedics — and ambulances — are prevented from getting back on the road for hour -
Impressionist Treasures: National Gallery of Canada puts Ordrupgaard Collection front and centre this summer
A little more than a century ago, Danish businessman Wilhelm Hansen made his fortune in insurance and spent it on art.
In 1892, a year after he and his wife, Henny, were married, they bought their first painting, a small oil study of a cow. By 1918, the couple had collected 140 paintings by 19th century Danish artists and had begun amassing French paintings also from the previous century. Thanks to a burst of buying in Paris between 1916 and 1920, into their hands came works by Manet and Monet, -

Liberal campaign promises to repay city for costs of event at train yard
The Ontario Liberal party is covering the extra costs OC Transpo incurred to host leader Kathleen Wynne, several Liberal candidates and journalists for a campaign appearance Thursday morning.
Leaders and groups of candidates often use public buildings for campaign events when they’re touting promises related to what goes on there. Health announcements are in or near hospitals and clinics, education announcements at schools, and in this case a transit-policy announcement at Ottawa Walkley Y -
'More than a museum': LGBTQI2+ space coming to LeBreton Flats in 2021
Ottawa will host the country’s first museum telling the stories of Canadians who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, intersex, two-spirit and more with a planned 2021 opening at a prime LeBreton Flats location.
The Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity (CCGSD) launched both a $10-million fundraising campaign and year-long consultation “on how folks would like to use the space” at an event Thursday.
The 15,000-square-foot facility planned as part of a mixed-use d -

Humboldt-Pitre drawing to raise money for Jonathan Pitre's charity
When Kanata artist Kerry MacGregor sketched a drawing of Jonathan Pitre meeting Humboldt Broncos players in heaven, the sketch went viral on social media.
Now, the prints are available in 5 X 7-inch form, for $27.99 with all proceeds to DEBRA Canada, Pitre’s charity.
Pitre, 17, beloved in Ottawa and beyond for his heroic battle against epidermolysis bullosa (EB), died on April 4, just a couple of days before the tragic bus crash in Saskatchewan that took the lives of 16 players and staff o -

Show #21: Urinetown: The Musical
Where: A. Y. Jackson Secondary School

What if peeing wasn’t free? What if you had to work extra hours to afford to answer nature’s call? Well, A.Y. Jackson Secondary School’s sidesplitting rendition of Urinetown: The Musical certainly served as a reminder to never take that porcelain bowl for granted.

Reevely: Cheaper driving or better transit — Ontario parties' transportation pledges starkly different
Despite his vows to give Ottawa $1 billion for the next stage of light rail construction, Doug Ford’s dodgy budget plan means he can’t be trusted to follow through, Liberal Leader Kathleen Wynne said in a campaign stop at an OC Transpo train yard Thursday morning.
All the parties have competed for two days over who will make getting around easiest and cheapest. What they choose to emphasize says a lot about their philosophies.
On Wednesday, Ford promised his Progressive Conservatives -

Ontario fire chiefs back Renfrew colleague forced to retire due to age
Forcing fire chiefs into retirement at age 60 appears to be illegal, says the association representing more than 600 chiefs and their deputies across Ontario.
“We have talked with our legal counsel on this, and we are of the opinion that the actions to mandate retirement age for a fire chief officer is a contravention” of the Ontario law governing fire services, said Steve Hernen. He is president of the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs, and serves as chief in Huntsville.

Runway work will mean quieter times for those north and south of airport
Things should get quieter over the next couple of months for people living under the main north-south flight paths for Ottawa International Airport.
As part of the airport’s taxiway reconstruction project, north-south runway 14/32 will be closed between May 22 and early August.
Almost all commercial aviation will be diverted to the east-west 07/25 runway, meaning “communities to the north and south of the airport will have virtually no traffic during the construction.”

Adam: Why high-density living isn't the answer to urban sprawl
The last few years have seen a dramatic increase in condo towers in Ottawa as the city made urban high-rise development a key element of its vision for sustainable planning.
The idea is that high-rise intensification ensures the kind of high density cities need to build more compact, sustainable, livable communities. As urban centres become denser and denser, with more people living in smaller spaces, the thinking goes, the less pressure there is to sprawl. Ottawa has certainly taken the idea to -

'What a novel idea': Doug Ford finds a huge, winning issue in Ontario
Has Doug Ford found a campaign issue that can push him to the promised land?
