An inside look at the virtual reality gaming experience in Ottawa
I’m at the bottom of a tall coral reef, surrounded by a school of jellyfish. I look up to a turtle floating above me, but he’s just out of my reach. Scanning the area for other sea creatures, I spot a little fish swimming my way.
I run toward it with my hand out, but instead I collide into a wall.
“You gotta watch out for that,” says the virtual reality attendant, who noted earlier that the dents in the wall came from unsuspecting gamers such as myself.

Reevely: Diane Deans's 'gender lens' would help find city hall's many blind spots
Diane Deans has a list of unfair things city hall either did or tried to do, halted only because of a woman’s perspective.
The Gloucester-Southgate councillor wants city hall to have a small “women’s bureau” to weigh in on how city council decisions might affect women differently from men, and a councillor designated to deal with women’s issues. Or, to be exact about it, she wants city council to take a close look at these ideas when it’s setting up after the -
Police watchdog to be notified of naloxone use — but only if case involves use of force: police chief
Ontario’s police watchdog must be notified of any cases where Ottawa officers administer anti-overdose medication — but only if use of force were involved in the interaction, this newspaper has learned.
Chief Charles Bordeleau sent an email to all officers Friday morning updating them on what has been a contentious battle between police forces in the province and their oversight agency, the Special Investigations Unit.
The SIU investigates incidents involving police where there has b -
Updated – Battle over jeans at the Royal Military College results in 1,000 cadets being punished
Almost 1,000 officer cadets are being punished at the Royal Military College because an unknown number of their fellow students have been wearing jeans during their off hours away from the Kingston campus.
The action is aimed at the entire officer cadet corps at the college even though there are no actual rules allowing group punishment.
The cadets have been confined to the grounds of the college and are undergoing a series of dress and room inspections as well as cleanup duties around the site -

Quebec police target barroom 'intimidation', drug trafficking
Police made the rounds to 75 Quebec bars and taverns last weekend, including ones in the Outaouais, in a bid to end intimidation and improve relations with bar owners and their customers.
Operation CIBLER — the rough translation is Operation Target or Spotlight — aims to tackle organized crime and drug trafficking province-wide. On Saturday, the Sûreté du Québec partnered with municipal forces to do the drop-ins at bars in 10 regions of the province.

Gatineau police tight-lipped on investigation at residence
Gatineau police have been at the scene of a residential home since Thursday night, with their investigation focused inside and outside the home.
A police spokesperson offered little detail, only that the officers are at a home at Rue de Chazel in Gatineau, at the corner of Rue Lemaire in Gatineau’s Le Baron neighbourhood.
On Friday afternoon, a number of Gatineau officers, including officers in plain clothes, returned to the site.

Ottawa CAS workers vote in favour of strike action as contract talks hit snag
Children’s aid workers in Ottawa have voted 74 per cent in favour of strike action, if necessary, if a contract isn’t reached with their employer, the Children’s Aid Society of Ottawa.
Local 454 of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union held the strike vote Thursday night.
The workers have been without a contract since Dec. 31 and talks with the CAS broke off on Feb. 17.
“We don’t want to go on strike, but we want a good contract,” said Michele Thorn, a ch -
Gatineau's historic Moore Farm to reopen with fresh funding
Months after the rain washed away its income and forced it to close, the Moore Farm in Gatineau is about to reopen thanks to fresh support and better drainage.
The historic farm is a familiar sight on Tâché Boulevard east of the Champlain Bridge, with a big red-and-white building set back from the road and up a hill.
It closed several months ago because of a cash shortfall.
Now Sylvain Bertrand, president of the co-operative that runs the farm, says it should reopen in the next few -
Battle over jeans at the Royal Military College results in 1,000 cadets losing privileges
A war over jeans has erupted at the Royal Military College as some officer cadets there refuse to conform to the institution’s dress rules.
As many as 1,000 cadets have been confined to the grounds of the military college in Kingston, Ont. and are undergoing a series of dress and room inspections as well as cleanup duties around the site for failing to follow the dress rules while off campus. Those rules prohibit the wearing of jeans during off hours, a regulation a number of officer cadet -

Keith Jarrett / Gary Peacock / Jack DeJohnette CD reviewed
After The Fall (ECM Records)Keith Jarrett / Gary Peacock / Jack DeJohnette
The requisite and even familiar components of a performance by Keith Jarrett’s “Standards” trio are all in place on After The Fall, the two-CD album released today.
Recorded in Newark, New Jersey, in November 1998, After The Fall offers the same kinds of standard material, and, indeed, signature songs, that Jarrett, bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette have recorded in t -

Nine arrested in Alexandria drug raids
Nine people were arrested and drugs, cash and weapons were seized in a series of early morning raids in Alexandria and North Glengarry Township on Friday.
Seven men and two women are facing charges after the raids at several homes and one business in the area.
Police did not release the names of those arrested or the charges they face, but promised more information, including the specific drugs and weapons seized, would be forthcoming.
The raids were conducted by the Ontario Provincial Police an -
Gee and Kishek: The city of Ottawa needs a women's bureau. Here's why
Earlier this week, Gloucester-Southgate city councillor Dian Deans said she would be lobbying her city council colleagues, including Mayor Jim Watson, to support the creation of a women’s bureau (and a women’s liaison position) at city hall. Deans is one of just four women councillors in Ottawa out of 24 – which, at 18 per cent of council positions, is roughly 10 percentage points lower than the national and Ontario averages for city councils.
Watson, however, doesn’ -
Spotlight: 'My guidance counsellor said "You should focus on other things"'
Spotlight is a weekly look at some of the people who are part of the Ottawa area’s arts community. This week Bruce Deachman talks with video game developer Derek Ledoux. In 2010, Ledoux co-founded the design collective Dirty Rectangles.
“Coming from my background in theatre, I think the theatre side and video games go hand in hand amazingly well. Theatre is all about the black box where anything can happen, and in games you have that same thing, too — you have this black box an -
Cutting Ice examines life and work of Annie Pootoogook
A red bra, a pair of scissors and a set of bagpipes are some of the unexpected images included in Cutting Ice, the new book on the life and work of the late Inuit artist Annie Pootoogook. Each item is meticulously rendered in coloured pencil and ink: The red bra hints at romance, the scissor blades are poised for use and the pipes make a delightful study of curved form and playful detail. They’re among the objects that caught Pootoogook’s eye during a career that brought her from her h -

A better life? Play explores what really happens when Mom leaves to work in another country
How Black Mothers Say I Love You, the new play that opens at the Great Canadian Theatre Company next week, was inspired by an exchange between playwright Trey Anthony and her cancer-stricken 80-year-old grandmother. In her playwright’s message, Anthony writes about asking her grandmother if there was anything she regretted. The answer: “My biggest regret was leaving my children … Sometimes as a mother you have to do what is best for your children. Gormley: How to tackle the New Cold War's cyber threats
The New Cold War is neither all that new nor all that cold.
Its main combatants are still the United States and Russia. Both are still brandishing nuclear weapons.
And one of these is doing rather more than merely contributing to “frosty relations,” as this sort of thing is usually described. That one is a flamethrower. The other is led by a man happy to be the kindling.
Russia has successfully sabotaged the democratic process in the United States. We don’t know precisely -

There is magic in the air and on the ice for the Ice Chips
Back when they were glorious, the Montreal Canadiens celebrated the passing of the torch from one legendary captain to the next.
Here’s another hockey-related hand-off, but in the literary arena — a passing of the torch of a beloved children’s book series. Roy MacGregor, poet laureate of Canadiana themes ranging from the Tom Thomson mystery to frozen shinny ponds as well as NHL hockey, delivered a publishing bonanza with his Screech Owl series for young readers.

Renovation Transformation: Unappealing indoor pool becomes family room with home library
One family’s dream pool became another family’s nightmare.
For thirty years the moisture from a large indoor pool infiltrated the walls of a home located in Ottawa’s west end community of Qualicum-Redwood. Improper ventilation caused wooden structures to rot and mould to accumulate.
Caroline Dubé and her family moved in eleven years ago and from the beginning, she wasn’t fond of the swimming area. Her antipathy grew when she found out the pool had a major leak whic -

MacDougall: Trudeau is politicizing the public service to protect himself
It should be taken as read that a prime minister doesn’t want his National Security Adviser to be the star of a farce. It’s a job where credibility is everything.
Why, then, is Justin Trudeau continuing to endorse his adviser’s now discredited tales of rogue Indian government factions being the ones behind Jaspal Atwal’s invitations, while simultaneously assigning blame to a backbench MP for the same? The obvious explanation — that it was a desperate prime minister -
'I was completely boggled that this was still happening'
All this to say, Mr. Trudeau, I know that Phoenix was a bag of dog poop that the former government left on your doorstep, and I know that a number of high ranking bureaucrats recommended going ahead and implementing the system, lighting that damn bag on fire. And in trying to put the fire out, well, the poop went everywhere. But you need to clean it up. I’m never getting that time back. My finances are in the toilet. Now fix it. Last year, all I asked for for Christmas was to be paid. That -
