Karen Ryan, as an Arctic archaeologist, had always wanted to create an exhibit on the doomed Franklin Expedition.
By 2014, she was planning one at the Canadian Museum of History, focusing on how two strong ships and 129 sailors had vanished without a trace in the 1840s, defeating all efforts to find them ever since.
Then searchers found one ship in 2014. Two years later, they found the other.
The exhibit took a hard left turn. The result opens Friday at the museum: Death in the Ice, a joint effo

Bagnall: After Phoenix, what will it take to build a new payroll system?
Can it be done? Can the federal government build a new pay system from scratch, even as it’s engaged in a herculean effort to fix a Phoenix platform that is careening out of control?
The answer, of course, is yes. This isn’t metaphysics, merely a laborious process of aligning pay rules with a computerized system for calculating what should appear on employees’ pay stubs.
But whatever path government and its unions select for rebuilding, the decision has to come quickly. The kno -
Reevely: Elliott's edge over other Tory candidates on health care is an asset as the system buckles
Health care is the Ontario government’s biggest responsibility by far, and it was only at Wednesday night’s leadership debate that we first heard any details about what the four people who want to lead the Progressive Conservative party would do with it.
We spend $53 billion a year on health care, well over a third of the provincial budget — education is second, and its budget is only half as big. Hospitals are jammed. Rural areas are still short on health services. The Liberal -

City confirms compliance with provincial long-term care order
The city says it has satisfied the requirements of a provincial order issued last summer over the state of its long-term care homes.
In a memo sent to council on Thursday, community and social services general manager Janice Burelle says the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care inspected the city’s four long-term care facilities in December and January after receiving the city’s compliance plans in September.
The city’s long-term care homes are Garry J. Armstrong, Peter D. Cla -
Door-to-door sales ban begins in Ontario
The province’s ban on door-to-door sale of certain services and appliances came into effect Thursday.
The ban, which has been long discussed by the Ontario government, comes after Ontarians have flooded the government’s consumer protection officials with complaints about salespeople showing up at homes and using questionable methods to sell water heaters, furnaces and water filters.
“These new laws will ensure that people aren’t being taken advantage of through unsolicite -

City spending $150K fix to clear stinky pond air in Riverside South
The city government thinks it can finally kill the stench coming from a stormwater pond in Riverside South.
The pond between Dusty Miller Crescent and Limebank Road stinks. The sulphur smell has made the area reek like rotten eggs in the winter. It’s been on city hall’s radar for years, but it hasn’t been able to stop the stench. Construction of new stormwater ponds in the community have made residents nervous.
But now, a $150,000 solution for the stinky pond is in the works an -
Hailed as 'voice for farmers, Eastern Ontario,' former MPP Noble Villeneuve dead at 79
Tributes to former Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry MPP Noble Villeneuve poured in Thursday after news of his death spread through the region and his party.
Villeneuve, a Progressive Conservative, served from 1983 to 1999. His roles included a stint as deputy speaker and four years of serving both as minister for francophone affairs and agriculture in premier Mike Harris’s government. He died in Maxville Wednesday at 79.

Nolan: Trudeau’s budget was momentous for women
On Tuesday, the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements, alongside women’s ongoing struggle for equity, won a victory. Never has Canada released a federal budget as progressive and in-step with a movement for change.
The common cycle is that an issue sparks outrage in the media, leading to outcries on social media, trending hashtags and organized marches, followed by the release of reports and the sharing of heart-wrenching stories – only to be met with inaction and disappointment. That cycle -

Does the Canadian Forces need an additional aircraft for close air support? Who knows?
At the recent Senate defence committee there was an interesting exchange between Senator Diane Griffin and Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Jon Vance. Griffin, a conservationist from Prince Edward Island, sits as an independent.
She asked Vance about the CF-18s.
“My understanding is that they were not used in Afghanistan in support of combat operations, but does the RCAF need an additional combat aircraft that can provide increased close air support for our Canadian Forces members on the gr -

Kaplan: Ontario PC debate thin on alternative ideas – and that's a problem
The second Ontario Progressive Conservative Party debate, Wednesday night in Ottawa, was a bit more entertaining than the first one. Tanya Granic Allen came out swinging (mostly at Caroline Mulroney), and Doug Ford took some surprising shots at Christine Elliott. The spirit of Patrick Brown loomed large, as the candidates discussed a variety of issues related to the strange saga of the former leader. Althia Raj – the debate’s moderator – added a playful, humorous tone to the ev -

Twin Elm Rugby Park in need of a serious makeover
Over the past four decades, Twin Elm Rugby Park has been home to all manner of rugby competition, including international test matches involving Canada, New Zealand and England.
But the Twin Elm clubhouse — in southwest Ottawa, near Richmond — is badly in need of repair and is the subject of a public fundraising campaign to undertake about $100,000 in upgrades.
Owned by four Ottawa area rugby clubs, Twin Elm is managed by a volunteer board.

Branford Marsalis talks classical vs. jazz and Donald Trump
Speaking on the phone a few weeks ago from his home in North Carolina, Branford Marsalis was looking ahead to a short run of classical concerts and the practising that he needed to do to be performance-ready.

'I'm here to entertain,' says man at centre of Ottawa 'dwarf-toss' debate
“Mighty” Mike Murga doesn’t much care for the ethical debate swirling around his profession of choice.
The California-based entertainer says his short stature hasn’t kept him from living the high life, spending the better part of two decades in a showbiz career that has taken him around the world.
He’s toured the globe with Mötley Crüe and Britney Spears, partied with Green Day and Cypress Hill, played dozens of roles in movies, TV shows and music videos, -

Reevely: Progressive Conservative leadership candidates get mean in Ottawa debate
With time running short and the polls tight, the four candidates to lead the Ontario Progressive Conservatives breathed fire at one another in their final debate Wednesday night, lighting up a ballroom at Ottawa’s Shaw Centre.
Whatever Christine Elliott, Doug Ford and Caroline Mulroney might have preferred, the ghost of Patrick Brown hung over them all, if only because Tanya Granic Allen kept summoning him up.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Capt. W.A. McAllister said the incident was a close call for the woman who was sleeping in the house at the time. “Fortunately, the occupant -
Council notes: OK given to bikes on LRT and pets on transit, city reserve funds need boost
Council voted 15-9 to allow bikes on Confederation Line trains at all hours of operation when the LRT line opens in November.
Cyclists will be required to board the train at a specific door and stand with their bikes at the nearest multi-use space on the car. There’s an initial 15-month period for the bikes to be allowed. Transpo will review how it’s working out after the first year of LRT operations.
Bikes are already allowed on Trillium Line trains.
