Saanich wants to stop monster houses from being built on farmland

B.C. to lower maximum fee for borrowing payday loans
via vancouversun.comThe provincial government announced on Monday a series of measures to tighten rules on payday-lending practices, which includes reducing the maximum fee lenders can charge.
As of Sept. 1st, payday lenders will only be able to charge $15 for every $100 borrowed, matching Ontario’s maximum fee, which was lowered back in January. B.C.’s current maximum rate sits at $17.
The new regulations would also give the lender two business days to cancel the loan agreement, without penalty.

Can you solve the mystery of the golden locket?
via vancouversun.comThe boy in the black and white photo looks to be about eight or nine. The sun is glinting off his light-coloured hair and he’s looking happily at someone out of the frame. On the other side of the locket is a girl who is maybe 14, wearing a jacket over a white blouse, her dark hair framing a smiling face.
Barb Decoteau, owner of Thrifty Bee’s thrift shop on Esquimalt Road, wants to identify the boy and the girl in the locket, and return what might be a heirloom to its rightful owner. -

Opinion: B.C. public pensions fuel climate change crisis

Ian Mulgrew: Statistics Canada reveals First Nations filling Canada's prisons
via vancouversun.comIn spite of more than 20 years of rhetoric and hand-wringing about the over-incarceration of Aboriginal people in Canada’s prisons, the latest Statistics Canada report indicates the grim systemic racism is increasing at a sickening pace.

Opinion: Managing public sector compensation crucial to balancing budget
via vancouversun.comDuring last year’s election campaign, and in his first full budget as premier, John Horgan promised to balance British Columbia’s operating budget. If his NDP government remains committed to this promise, the coming negotiations on compensation with 183 public sector unions will be critically important.
After all, at $29.1 billion, government employee compensation constitutes more than half of all provincial spending, so managing this area of spending is critical.
