Douglas Todd: Canada's psychologists urge marijuana vigilance
via vancouversun.comApart from the #Metoo maelstrom and the housing crises in Toronto and Vancouver, few things stir up Canadians more than marijuana, which its promoters claim is the cure for everything from glaucoma to brain disease.
Should private outlets sell recreational marijuana? Is it more enjoyable to smoke or swallow cannabis? Will I get rich on pot stocks? Is it possible to remove the criminal underground from Canada’s $6 billion-a-year cannabis industry?

Town Talk: Richmond animal hospital opens with Year of the Dog
via vancouversun.comPET PROJECT: The Year of the Dog started off encouragingly for Richmond cats. Dogs, too. What began in the 1990s as the Richmond Homeless Cats organization and grew into the Richmond Animal Protection Society or RAPS, recently opened RAPS Animal Hospital in a place known for horsepower. That’s the Richmond Auto Mall where Applewood Auto Group CEO Darren Graham donated a van and then six years of rent-free occupancy for the 6,000-square-foot hospital on its property. Mayor Malcolm Brodie an -
Conversations That Matter: Independent TV's role in democracy
via vancouversun.comOne of the challenges that mainstream television faces is sameness. We’ve all scrolled through the listings and been presented with an endless array of programming that fits into advertiser-supported shows.
Advertisers want to speak to as large and as focused audience as possible. They have a product to sell and they want to place their product next to programming that appeals to a broad audience.
Therein lies the problem when it comes to the production of programming that challe -
Richard Wozny memorial service: "What is real?"
via vancouversun.comSome people have asked me to post my reflection at the Thursday evening memorial service/celebration of life in Vancouver for real-estate analyst Richard Wozny. I’ve written several pieces in the past few months about him, as he struggled with terminal cancer. It was a privilege to have the family ask me to speak, and to meet Richard’s many friends and family. Here are my notes:
Marlene has asked me to say a few words.

Opinion: Time for B.C. to move beyond taxi monopolies
via vancouversun.comA committee of MLAs this week made 32 recommendations on how to regulate ride-hailing services, paving the way for government to introduce legislation this fall to finally bring the in-demand service to B.C.

Opinion: A home for everyone
via vancouversun.comWe listened to Tuesday’s Throne Speech with great hope for the future of British Columbians. “Home is at the heart of belonging — to a neighbourhood, a community, a province or country,” read the Lieutenant-Governor. “Home is the place to hang our hat, to raise a family, to feel safe and secure.”
Communities across the province are faced with insecurity and instability because there is a mismatch between housing need and what’s available. Our economies a -
Letters: B.C.'s 'petty interference' irks Albertan
via vancouversun.comIt is with dismay that we in Alberta see your premier inferring that his government will delay a pipeline which has cleared all regulatory hurdles. The Northern Gateway would also have been a boom for B.C. and your citizens but your previous representatives allowed special interest groups once again to hijack the agenda of a project of national interest.
This petty interference in delaying the Trans Mountain project for the sake of keeping a shaky minority government in power is wrong and not of -

Laura Jones: B.C. plays dangerous game in pipeline ploy
via vancouversun.comThe B.C. government is playing a dangerous game by picking a fight with Alberta in the name of “using every tool in the tool kit” to block Kinder Morgan’s approved Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project.
A key word worth repeating is approved. A smart millennial friend half-asked me yesterday: “the project was actually approved?” It was a good reminder that most people have lives that don’t involve following the complexities of big resource developmen -
