Opinion: Single-use coffee cups are a blight. Let's emulate Freiburg
Every week, an estimated 4 million single-use coffee cups are thrown into the trash in the greater Montreal area. Most of these are made of paper layered with a thin plastic coating, or are made of polystyrene foam, and are neither recyclable nor compostable.
How should Montreal aim to reduce the environmental impact caused by the annual production of 2,200 tons of cups that, after a 12-minute use (the average life of a hot beverage to-go cup), will be buried in landfills forever?

What the Puck: Canadiens reaching playoffs might not be a good omen
I have some bad news for you today. The Montreal Canadiens are going to make the playoffs.
Of course I’m partly trying to get a rise out of you, but there’s also some truth to the notion that there is, in fact, a downside to the Habs squeezing into the NHL post-season this year. As of Monday morning, our heroes have a pretty solid grip on the second and last wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. Montreal has 35 points, a full four points ahead of their closest rival, the New York -

Update: Montreal to deploy scare teams to deal with urban coyotes
Following a growing number of coyote sightings and a series of attacks on small children last summer, Montreal will dispatch teams to try to scare the animals away from problem areas, increase information campaigns for residents and trap and euthanize animals that have become aggressive.
It will also involve training the population on how to react when they see a coyote, screaming and waving to scare the animals away so they don’t get comfortable in the company of humans.
