Osheaga to address women's safety with new security initiatives
Osheaga is preparing to announce new measures regarding the safety of female festival-goers, as well as a broader all-around security strategy, the Montreal Gazette has learned.
Female fan safety has been a hot topic since Osheaga attendee Melanie Doucet told media that she was drugged during the Red Hot Chili Peppers’s performance at last year’s festival.
Doucet was able to recognize the symptoms of the date rape drug and get herself to safety; but after the fact, she expressed disa -
Josh Freed: Thumbing through the expenses for Montreal 375 projects
I have finally seen the much-discussed granite tree stumps on Mount Royal — and I’m stumped.
A small cluster of grey stone lumps showed up on the mountain last week, in an area dotted with actual tree stumps.
There’s nothing ugly about the slanted granite “stumps,” or the French poems engraved on them. But I prefer the real stumps, which are homegrown on our mountain — and definitely cheaper than the $3.45 million for several dozen granite ones.
I don’t -
From the archives: In 1711, Montreal turned to prayer as hostile troops approached from New England
This story was first published on July 9, 2016, in the Montreal Gazette.
Nerves were on edge in Montreal that summer of 1711. Once more the English were threatening to invade, and the power of New France, Montreal included, to defend itself was perilously limited. Warnings had been coming in for months. A well-equipped army from the New England colonies, led by Col. Francis Nicholson, would march along Lake Champlain and the Richelieu River, aiming for Montreal. At the same time, a fleet from Bo -
Editor's notebook: Oleg Dergachov joins cartoon team at the Montreal Gazette
As regular readers know, Montreal Gazette cartoonist Aislin (a.k.a. Terry Mosher) is celebrating his 50th anniversary this year with a career retrospective book, From Trudeau to Trudeau, and special exhibitions at the McCord Museum (until Aug. 13) and in Toronto and Ottawa. He’s also sharing some of his favourite memories on page A2 of the print edition of the Gazette every Monday.
This is all a prelude to next year, when Aislin will cut back to drawing one cartoon per week for us. With th -
Devastated family, friends bid farewell to Dorval teen killed by train
Tristan Morrissette-Perkins cut a handsome figure three weeks ago when he attended his high school prom. His crisp blue suit and brown dress shoes were de rigueur with the Class of 2017 at John Rennie High School in Pointe-Claire.
But the afterglow of grad celebrations came to a sudden and tragic end the evening of July 3 when the 16-year-old was struck and killed by a passenger train on a rail bridge near Lancaster, Ont.
Now the Morrissette-Perkins family is facing their darkest hour as they pr -

Herb Zurkowsky: Alouettes rewrite their obit with stunning win against Stampeders
So many things could have gone wrong on this night for the Alouettes.
There were the two early interceptions thrown by quarterback Darian Durant, one of which led to a field goal. The second, when he should have eaten the football and taken a quarterback sack, was an absolutely mind-boggling decision.
There was the third quarter when the Calgary Stampeders, arguably the strongest team in the Canadian Football League — at least they were last season — outscored Montreal 11-0, erasing -

Alouettes' offence sprouts for a 30-23 wet win against Calgary
Just when it seemed safe to bury the Alouettes and their inept offence, Montreal pulled a fast one.
The Als scored three offensive touchdowns Friday night at Molson Stadium, defeating the Calgary Stampeders 30-23 before 18,610 rain-soaked spectators. It was a season-high offensive production for Montreal.
Montreal had scored only four touchdowns in three games prior to sending the Stamps to their first defeat of the season. The players and management kept preaching patience and, for one night at -
