There's a Montreal 375 cocktail, and these are the places to order it
What — other than street closures and poutine — does Montreal taste like?
This question, believe it or not, did not originate as an improv prompt at Just for Laughs. Rather, it is the subject of a mixological creation in honour of Montreal’s 375th birthday.
The drink’s creation, Eater Montreal reports, was spearheaded by Cold Room bar owner Kevin Demers. The drink unites Quebec’s two solitudes with London gin to represent anglos and Gentian liqueur for the francopho -

Mohawks protest at Oka development site
OKA — Exactly 27 years and one day after the outbreak of the Oka Crisis, Mohawks gathered Wednesday to halt a residential development they say is encroaching on their sacred pine forest.
A few dozen trees have already been cleared to make way for hydro lines that will power the neighbourhood and more have been marked for destruction. It was the expansion of a golf course into the pines that triggered the 1990 standoff between the Mohawk Warriors and Canadian Forces.

Québécois poutine became ice cream in New Zealand, and now we're scared
Poutine, Quebec’s unofficial national dish, has made it in New Zealand, but some of the recipe’s finer points may have been lost in translation.
Giapos Ice Cream of Auckland, New Zealand, has announced it is celebrating National Ice Cream Month by serving a poutine ice cream.
The dish, for better or for worse, is not exactly what its name implies. Instead of infusing the flavours of fries, squeaky cheese curds and brown sauce into an ice cream like contestants might do on Iron -

Opinion: Quebec should get rid of high school ministry exams
Many Quebec high school students, particularly those who’ve just completed Secondary IV and V, are just now finding out their marks in courses where there is a ministry exam.
These standardized high school exams, which weigh heavily in students’ final marks, are a nightmare for students and a nuisance for teachers and principals. They must be a headache for Ministry of Education administrators, too.
There are three main problematic areas: substance, slip-ups and security.

Opinion: Health centralization is opposite of what's needed
Health Minister Gaétan Barrette is currently piloting Bill 130, which curtails the autonomy of doctors and gives the health minister the right to make changes to the internal rules governing health establishments. This is the just the latest of countless attempts in the past three decades to reform the province’s health-care system. The reason for this governmental hyperactivity is simple: There are multiple systemic problems, especially in terms of long emergency room wait times an -

Squirrels are officially rodentia non grata in Dorchester Square.
City of Montreal workers plopped two peanuts in a metal trap Tuesday morning in a bid to lure squirrels that have been gnawing at trees in the leafy downtown square.
