OTTAWA — The Ontario Court of Appeal has quashed a sentencing appeal in the case of a Manitoba man who stormed the gates of Rideau Hall in 2020 and sought an armed confrontation with the prime minister.
A decision dated Thursday says the six-year sentence handed to Corey Hurren in March 2021, less a year for the time he spent in custody before his sentencing, was “entirely fit.”

TORONTO — The 2023 thoroughbred racing season at Woodbine Racetrack will start on time.
Woodbine Entertainment and the Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association of Ontario (HBPA) agreed on a two-year deal Friday.The agreement commits $62 million in purses for the 2023 and 2024 thoroughbred racing meets. It also includes a 133-race day meet in 2023 and 129 dates in 2024.

NANAIMO — Police say they have arrested a man in Nanaimo, B.C., who was allegedly threatening people with a toy bow and arrow that had a syringe with a needle attached to the arrow’s tip.

NEW YORK — The NBA fined Memphis Grizzlies guard-forward Dillon Brooks US$35,000 on Friday for shoving a camera person on the sideline after chasing a loose ball in a loss in Miami.

AMQUI, Que. — A memorial mass will be held this evening in the Quebec town where two people were killed and nine injured when a pickup truck crashed into pedestrians.

POND INLET, Nunavut — The Nunavut Department of Health has declared a tuberculosis outbreak in Pond Inlet.

The federal environment minister wants to set up a new group with the Alberta government and Indigenous communities to monitor contamination problems in the oilsands.
