The search for an adult black bear that attacked a three-year-old girl in Maple Ridge was ongoing as of 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12, as BC Conservation Officers continued to gather information and observe bears in the area.

RCMP are warning visitors to use caution and stay safe after the drowning death of a 13-year-old girl at Cultus Lake on Saturday (Aug. 8).

The Bald Range wildfire experienced growth overnight, according to an update from the BC Wildfire Service.
The blaze is now estimated at 18,450 hectares in size, over 600 hectares larger than it was listed at on Aug. 11.
Eighteen evacuation orders and alerts remain in place due to the fire.

BCWS is still holding the Bradley Creek wildfire near Vernon as of Wednesday, Aug. 12.
The blaze remains at 2,649 hectares as of 7:12 a.m., with several fire crews attacking it.

On July 28, the Alert Bay RCMP was notified of an injured otter at the ’Namgis Dock in Alert Bay.
Earlier that day, local residents heard sounds of animals in distress and went to investigate. Upon arrival, they discovered three juvenile otters entangled in sections of a fishing net that had been left on the dock, an area frequently travelled by local wildlife.

A pickup truck was found partially submerged in a creek near Mission last week.
According to Mission RCMP’s “Community Connection” crime recap, a grey 2019 Dodge Ram 1500 was spotted by a backcountry explorer last Monday night (Aug. 3) in the middle of Weatherhead Creek, near Davis Lake.
Police said the Dodge Ram was submerged up to the bottom of its doors in water.

A wildfire is burning out of control at the Summerland landfill.
The blaze sparked separately from the Bald Range wildfire, which ignited on Friday, Aug, 7.
Graham Statt, Chief Administrative Officer of Summerland, said that the landfill blaze is considered a new and separate incident, although he did not give a date of when the fire started.
According to Statt, the blaze at the landfill is about 1.5 km from the Summerland water treatment plant and therefore being closely monitored.
