UPDATE:A collision that shut down the Coquihalla Highway northbound near Comstock Road for several hours is now being reported as a fatal incident.

A 39-year-old Abbotsford man has been charged with manslaughter with a firearm in relation to a fatal shooting at the Whatcom Road homeless camp in March.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) announced the charge against James Jared Yake on Monday afternoon (June 15).
Wayne Versfelt, 69, died in the shooting, which occurred just after 11 p.m. on March 23 at the park-and-ride site. The area was the site of a large encampment until its recent cleanup by authorities.

Opioid-related drug deaths in Canada declined by 23 per cent from 2024 to 2025, but remain elevated above pre-pandemic levels, according to data released by the federal government on Monday, June 15.
Across Canada, an average of 15 people per day died as a result of using opioids illegally in 2025, for a yearly total of 5,608. Deaths had spiked from 3,598 in 2019 to a pandemic-era high of 8,040 in 2023, but have been declining steadily since.

The website, Birth Alerts BC Class Action, announced the proposed settlement on June 8. A 56-year-old Surrey woman was killed in a crash near Mission on Sunday (June 14).
Mission RCMP said two cars were involved in a collision at approximately 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of Lougheed Highway and Sylvester Road in Hatzic.

A man was airlifted to hospital with serious burns and a woman is missing after a house fire in Mission on Monday morning (June 15).
First responders attended the 31700 block of Townshipline Avenue between Clay Street and Keystone Avenue just after 8 a.m. for a residence that was fully engulfed.

West Shore RCMP intercepted a commercial transport truck driving the wrong way on the Trans Canada Highway on Saturday (June 13) morning.

End of B.C. rural healthcare bonus could worsen staffing challenges, Union says

A program designed to attract and retain rural healthcare workers is coming to an end this year.
According to the B.C. government website, the Provincial Rural Retention Incentive (PRRI) is a monetary incentive of up to $2,000 per quarter, for a maximum of $8,000 per year, for healthcare workers in 74 communities across B.C., including Quesnel. The incentive, which started back on April 1, 2024, is scheduled to finish by Sept. 30, 2026.

TransLink says there were more than one million boardings on June 13, the system’s busiest Saturday for a BC Place event since the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.
There were 1,031,000 boardings on Saturday, a 14.3-per-cent increase from the typical 901,600 boardings, a news release from TransLink said Monday (June 15). There was a total of 648,200 daily trips, which was a 17.8-per-cent increase from a typical day of 550,300 trips.

Going into Sunday’s game against Pacific FC, Vancouver FC head coach Martin Nash said it would be “nice” to get a victory before the team took a World Cup break.

Entire city block evacuated after gas leak reported in downtown Chilliwack

The entire block of downtown Chilliwack was being evacuated at 9 a.m. Monday (June 15) after a gas leak was reported at a Wellington Avenue address.
Emergency responders were called to the alley at the rear of Wellington Avenue where someone had called in the smell of gas.
Investigating fire officials determined the entire commerical/residential block had to be evacuated from Young Road to Wellington Avenue to Mill Street, to Victoria Avenue.

The incident happened northbound on the highway close to Comstock Road just after 8 a.m. on June 15.

Motorcycle rider airlifted to hospital after Abbotsford crash

A motorcycle rider was airlifted to hospital on Saturday (June 13) after a serious collision on Whatcom Road in Abbotsford.
According to social media posts from the Abbotsford Police Department, an officer was also injured while managing the scene when a vehicle failed to stop at the road closure and drove through the collision area.
Emergency crews responded to the collision between a motorcycle and SUV at the Whatcom Road and South Parallel Road intersection at approximately 2:06 p.m.
