A motorist’s speedy joyride through Oak Bay came to an abrupt end last week.
On July 4, Oak Bay PD conducted speed enforcement along Beach Drive and stopped a motorcyclist travelling 114 km/h in a posted 40 km/h zone.
The rider was issued a violation ticket for excessive speeding, and the bike was impounded for seven days.
In the wake of the incident, Oak Bay PD has issued a warning about the dangers of speeding.

Researchers at the University of British Columbia have linked an inherited gene mutation to an aggressive form of prostate cancer, possibly paving the way for new genetic testing that could save lives.
After analyzing the genetic data for 4,500 prostate cancer patients, they found an inherited mutation in a gene dubbed CDK12 in five unrelated men, all of whom had developed an aggressive form of the disease between the ages of 44 and 62.

B.C. saw the fewest monthly drug deaths provincewide in May of any month since February of 2020.
But 3.5 people per day still died due to suspected unregulated drug toxicity, for a total of 109 deaths, according to preliminary data from the B.C. Coroners Service.
The death rate over the past five years for people over 60 years old has remained relatively stable, with a sharp decline in deaths among people aged 19 to 59. More than three-quarters of those who died in May were male.

A 36-year-old man has been charged in Abbotsford in relation to the seizure of 12 kilograms of drugs, more than $60,000 in cash, and a handgun.
Sgt. Paul Walker, media officer with the Abbotsford Police Department, said the investigation began in April 2025, after officers spotted a man known to be involved in drug trafficking driving a vehicle while prohibited from doing so.

A B.C. Supreme Court judge has sentenced Nicholas Kenneth Anthony to six months of house arrest followed by a six-month curfew and 12 months probation after he pleaded guilty to fraudulently buying Mercedes SUVs in Surrey and Richmond.

Three people have been charged with gun and drug crimes related to a police search in Surrey last September by the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia.
During the search police seized 3D printed Glock firearm parts including receivers, grips, gun magazines, rail kits, ammunition, gun barrels, a GPS tracker, a loaded 3D printed firearm, and methamphetamine, MDMA and a cutting agent.

Surrey Fire Service crews fought a sizable house fire Wednesday night in a neighbourhood close to Bear Creek Park.
Around 11:15 p.m. Wednesday (July 8), firefighters responded to a house fire in the 9000-block of Edinburgh Place.

The Brunswick Complex wildfires in the Fraser Canyon remain out of control, with the Ainslie Creek blaze growing to 16,987 hectares.
The latest BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) update on Wednesday night (July 8) lists the Brunswick Creek fire at 2,623 hectares, while the Ainslie Creek fire almost doubled in size since the morning.
“This wildfire has grown substantially over the last two days, and is highly visible from North Bend, Boston Bar and surrounding communities,” the update reads. -

More people have walked on the moon than have lived four decades with a donor heart. On July 7, Simon Keith joined that exclusive club, marking exactly 40 years since his first life-saving transplant.
Long before he became the first athlete in the world to play professional sports after a heart transplant, Keith grew up in Greater Victoria. He played youth soccer with the Lower Island Youth Soccer Association before suiting up for the Prospect Lake Lakers in the Vancouver Island Soccer League.

A man had to cling to debris from his sunken vessel for more than an hour after it capsized on Stuart Lake near Fort St. James on Tuesday, July 8.
Fort St. James RCMP say three people needed to be rescued after a 17.5-foot vessel capsized near Sowchea Bay. Before officers arrived, RCMP say a nearby resident heard cries for help, launched their boat, and went to assist.
