A new report being released Thursday is expected to outline a possible model for legally regulated heroin sales.
Produced by the B.C. Centre on Substance Use, the report aims to address the ongoing opioid crisis, organized crime’s role in the drug trade and the profitability of an unregulated fentanyl market.
The report’s authors are scheduled to speak Thursday at a news conference on the proposal, alongside public health officials, addiction specialists and recovered substance-users

Review board recommends B.C. child-killer Allan Schoenborn be assessed for supervised outings
via vancouversun.comThe British Columbia Review Board has ruled that the man who killed his three children while severely mentally ill remains a threat to public safety, although it recommends Allan Schoenborn should be assessed for supervised outings within six months.
Schoenborn, who’s now 50 years old, has been held at the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital since before a 2010 court decision that found him not criminally responsible for killing his daughter and two sons.
In a written decision released Wednesday -

Ian Mulgrew: Pot consumers buying in a haze of misinformation and no information
via vancouversun.comTim Harvey, CEO of Lighthouse Genomics which specializes in gene-sequencing cannabis plants, says the lack of transparency is the “elephant in the room” of marijuana legalization.
Neither the federal nor provincial government demands cannabis producers genetically identify their product, ensure each harvest is identical, warn of genetic modifications or identify so-called frankenplants.
The situation, he said, is the equivalent of farmers being allowed to sell Granny Smith apple -

Letters, Feb. 20: SNC-Lavalin case shows the importance of a free press, reader says
via vancouversun.comSo Gerry Butts, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s principal secretary, has resigned while claiming adamantly that he has done nothing wrong. That doesn’t make sense.
Why would he resign if he hasn’t done anything wrong? Unless of course he is trying to take the hit in order to protect someone more important. Sun Run nutrition: Should you be drinking a sport drink?
via vancouversun.comA sport drink is beneficial anytime you are doing heavy exercise for more than about 60-75 minutes, especially in hot and humid weather, as this will help prevent dehydration and cramping.
When it comes to Sun Run training, if running or walking less than an hour, then water should be your fluid of choice for hydration. You may find a sport drink useful the day of the Sun Run, particularly if you had breakfast 2-3 hours prior to the start and begin to feel sluggish as you are running.

Sun Run coaching: Week 6: Snow days — don't let the weather stop you
via vancouversun.comSuch a big snow we’ve had this past week! Beautiful, but challenging — and there’s still a lot of snow and slush on the ground out here in White Rock.
Worse still is the black ice underneath. If you shorten your stride and slow down, keeping your centre of gravity a bit lower, and find some harder packed snow on a trail or along the side of the road, you’ll be okay. Better still, head up the mountain and go for a snowshoe or a cross-country ski.

App helps families looking after seniors avoid 'caregiver burnout'
via vancouversun.comMany B.C. seniors are opting to have their adult children look after them at home.
Yet those children are finding the task of taking care of ailing parents much more stressful than anticipated and it is causing a high number to experience what health experts call “caregiver burnout.”
In fact, B.C.’s rate of caregiver distress (30 per cent) remains the second highest rate in Canada, according to a report by B.C.’s senior advocate.

Wine Guy: B.C. wine finds a sweet ending
via theprovince.comJust when we thought winter would pass with barely a whimper (remember when West Coasters were taunting easterners with their early bloom pix a few weeks back?), along came a proper, snow-bedecked cold front.
No real bother as long as you’re properly prepared (well, except for those early bloomers), and wine-wise nothing staves off the wintry chills like a cockle-warming dessert wine.
Fortuitously for local wine enthusiasts, B.C. wineries are increasingly bottling sweet endings.Quails -
