Willes’ Musings: The kids never fail to deliver drama at the World Juniors
via theprovince.comIf Saturday’s gold-medal game wasn’t enough to get you excited, here are 2019’s first musings and meditations on the world of sports.
• This is the beauty of the World Junior Championship. The details of games and tournaments get lost over time but what endures is the powerful, timeless images these kids provide.
I first started following the WJC in 1982, my first year in newspapers and the first year Canada sent a national team to the event. I’ve also been fortunate -
'Into thin air': Family seeks answers, 10 months after young man vanished from B.C. ski town
via vancouversun.comAround 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17, Heather Shtuka sent a text message, as she often did, to her 20-year-old son Ryan’s cellphone. It read: “Good morning, Lovebug. I hope you have a great day.”
But Heather could see the message was never delivered, she said in a recent interview, as she remembered that morning 10 months ago. By that time, Ryan’s phone was already dead or switched off.
The night before, Ryan was at a house party in Sun Peaks, the resort municipality -

Thatcher Demko looking to make the most of his chance with Canucks
via theprovince.comTORONTO — Still a little groggy from a pre-game nap, Thatcher Demko tried to ignore his phone buzzing with text messages.
The Vancouver Canucks’ prized goalie prospect saw the team had just traded its backup netminder, a move potentially paving the way for his promotion to the NHL.
But the Utica Comets were playing in a few hours and that required the 23-year-old’s full attention.
It was only after his 31-save performance in a 4-2 victory that the magnitude of the deal that shi -
Ben Kuzma: Elias Pettersson’s fire of desire has helped rev up the rebuild
via theprovince.comApparently, Elias Pettersson looks for trouble.
The trouble with that summation by Don Cherry during his Saturday shtick on Hockey Night in Canada is that it doesn’t tell the true story of what makes the injured Vancouver Canucks centre tick.
Elias Pettersson nearly scored on a breakaway Thursday before being injured.
It’s the fire in the belly of the Calder Trophy front-runner that often gets lost in the conversation because his remarkable playmaking and goal-scoring exploits domina -

via theprovince.comThe new year begins with many a blown resolution by Vancouver Whitecaps fans.
They go into 2019 suffering hand-wringing angst, bouts of stress eating and trepidation-triggered tipple, no doubt blowing their newly-started keto and kumquat diets apart in the same spectacular manner their MLS team’s roster was.
