Two St. Bernard-cross puppies who spent four days trapped partway down a cliff near Mission have landed what the local SPCA branch manager says are their best possible “forever” homes.
Krista Shaw of the Mission SPCA says two of the search-and-rescue crew members who rescued the 16-week-old dogs from the side of the cliff have been selected to adopt them.
Shaw says the branch received dozens of applications following coverage of the rescue, but staff felt giving the pups to their res

Rescued pit bull bites three people in Colwood party basement suite
via vancouversun.comVICTORIA — A rescue dog adopted this past summer by a woman in suburban Colwood has been seized and is being assessed after it bit three people early Saturday.
RCMP said they and paramedics answered a call for a dog attack at a house in the 3000 block of Pickford Road about 12:30 a.m. Several people, including children, were at the house at the time.
Kyla Johnson, 22, who lives in the basement suite of the house with her fiancé, said she adopted Rex, a four-year-old pit bull, last s -
What we consider garbage is just a waste: Food Network's Bob Blumer
via vancouversun.comWhen it is time to scrape leftovers and the odds and ends from the cooking process into the garbage, Bob Blumer likes to imagine he is under surveillance.
“Every time I go to throw something out, I stop and I think about it for a second,” he said. “And you know what? That last eighth of the onion can be used for something.”
And so the end of an onion and the bottom from a bell pepper find their way into another dish down the road — a fried rice, soup, or a frittata. -

Bowen Byram’s quest for a spot on Team Canada goes through LEC on Tuesday
via theprovince.comLet the Bowen Byram and Aaron Ekblad comparisons begin.
Ekblad, the 2014 NHL Draft first overall draft choice who’s now a key part of the Florida Panthers core group, was the last 17-year-old defenceman to make Team Canada at the world juniors, sticking with the 2014 side. There’s a case to be made that Byram, the Vancouver Giants sophomore rearguard, could do the same this coming tournament, which will be held in Vancouver and Victoria starting Dec. 26.

Proposal for new UBC real estate development draws community opposition
via vancouversun.comThe University of B.C. campus has been transformed in recent decades by clusters of mostly market condos and townhomes, along with retail space and thousands of new residents.
By providingland to real estate developers, on 99-year leases, the university has been able to significantly increase its endowment fund.
Now, there is a proposal to develop another major campus neighbourhood known as Stadium Road.
Even though some are in favour of increasing the supply of on-campus housing, especially for -
Metro's downpour causes North Vancouver parks washouts, slides
via vancouversun.comStormy weather and mudslides this weekend have prompted the closures of a popular park in North Vancouver.
Metro Vancouver says winds of 80 kilometres per hour and high river levels made Lynn Headwaters Regional Park dangerous and debris flow has blocked the entrance road.
The regional district says the entire park is closed due to damage and hazardous conditions, although the weather cleared by Sunday.
The full closure follows partial closures earlier this weekend.
On Saturday, the Lower Lynn L -
Vancouver Showcase NCAA basketball tournament to be beamed around the globe
via theprovince.comIt may not be the Madness, but it’s still a crazy idea.
Bringing 12 NCAA basketball team’s — four men’s, eight women’s — to play a tournament on a purpose-built temporary court at the Vancouver Convention Centre, becoming the first NCAA men’s and women’s tournament outside of the U.S. seems to be an idea rooted in fantasy. But that crazy idea will become reality when the Vancouver Showcase tips off later this month.

Canucks road trip preview: Six games, two weeks … how many wins to come?
via theprovince.comWhen we first saw the Canucks’ schedule earlier this summer, three things stood out right away: that big six-game trip in October to open the season, then a similar six-game trip a month later and another six-gamer just after Christmas.
The Canucks, of course, went 3-3 on their season-opening swing through Calgary, Raleigh, Tampa, Sunrise, Pittsburgh and Winnipeg last month.
That was a fine start to the 2018-19 season. This week, they embark on the second big sojourn around the league.

Pressure on government to recognize physician assistants
via vancouversun.comOn the other side of most B.C. borders — four U.S. states plus Alberta — patients can see a physician assistant for many health concerns.
But not in B.C., where the province does not recognize physician assistants as health professionals, even though they’re trained to do some of the same work that family doctors do.
Pressure is mounting, however, now that B.C. Green leader Andrew Weaver has become a vocal champion of physician assistants.

New West teen on the ball, makes bats in family garage betting if he builds it they (customers) will come
via vancouversun.comOscar Porcellato is a bit of a wonderboy, making his own baseball bat just like Roy Hobbs did in the movie The Natural.
Hobbs, played by Robert Redford, named the bat he made Wonderboy; Porcellato stamps his with a stylized OP.
“I’ve always been into woodworking,” Oscar, a 6-foot-1 left-hitting slugger with the Whalley Chiefs of the B.C. Premier Baseball League, said in a backyard workshop that used to be the family garage. “I made magic wands for my friends when we were -

The accident happened around 9 a.m. on Southwest Marine Drive during the 21.5-kilometre Vancouver Fall Classic half-marathon at UBC.

Letters to The Province, Nov. 5, 2018: Proportional representation will give political power back to the people, reader argues
via theprovince.comThe reason we are having yet another referendum on changing our electoral system is very simple. The majority of voters are not satisfied with the kinds of governments our current first-past-the-post electoral system is producing.
The sad part about this referendum is that voters have become so disillusioned about our politicians and governments that they have failed to become informed about either system.
The No side is acutely aware of this handicap and has engaged in fear-mongering, insisting -
John Redekop: Proportional representation is a good idea but the options offered in referendum are lousy
via vancouversun.comRecently, The Vancouver Sun carried John Egan’s excellent column describing New Zealand’s simple mixed member proportional representation electoral system. That option makes good sense. It’s easy to understand and it combines the best of our present single member plurality system — misnamed first past the post — and the best of proportional representation (PR). Unfortunately, the three so-called PR systems offered B.C. voters are all less meritorious. In fact, all a -

Review: Drake live might be a gamble, but this Vancouver show popped
via vancouversun.comDrake live is a gamble. You can bet his fans will love whatever the rapper does. But his past concerts have been uneven, to be kind.
Given the global news about the events at the casino at the Parq, it was being discussed angrily by the audience who packed Rogers Arena.

Ed Willes: Buono’s B.C. Place bon voyage filled with tributes, and an anti-climactic non-contest
via theprovince.comPrior to his final game as a CFL head coach, Wally Buono was asked what he’ll miss about the game.

Then he damn sure won’t miss games like Saturday night. Here’s what we learned from the Calgary Stampeders’ 26-9 victory over the Lions in Buono’s farewell to B.C. Place in front of 24,114 fans.
