Bob Cole back in Vancouver for Hockey Night in Canada, maybe for the last time
via theprovince.comIf there’s one voice most Canadians living today think of when they think of Hockey Night in Canada, it’s a good bet they think of Bob Cole’s.
And at 85, Cole is still calling hockey games, though that looks set to change.
Before the 2018-19 season — Cole’s 50th in the play-by-play caller’s chair — Rogers Sportsnet announced that Cole would call 10 games this season and then switch off his microphone for the last time.
He was the lead play-by-play caller -

Mike Smyth: The Yes side won the first week of the pro-rep referendum
via theprovince.comIt may be a dead heat on paper, but on the ground it was a different story in Week One of B.C.’s crucial electoral reform referendum.
As Elections B.C. began mailing out more than three million ballots, the Yes campaign in support of proportional representation came charging out of the starting gates.
The No side stumbled with an unintentionally hilarious TV commercial warning goose-stepping Nazi thugs could take power if pro-rep forces succeed.
The pollsters say this referendum is so clos -

Meet the chef: Steven Hodge's peach didn't fall far from the tree
via vancouversun.comSteven Hodge’s mom owned a bakery in Ontario and he grew up surrounded by the smell of pastries, pies and cookies. He got his own start at the California School of Culinary Arts. He made the move to pastry in response to a challenge, because he was specifically warned that it would be extremely difficult. No short cuts for Steven. The Delights of the Dempster to Tuk
via theprovince.comOn hearing that the last section of the Dempster Highway opened last fall from Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk on the Arctic Ocean, I knew it was a drive for me.
Our Air North flight landed in Whitehorse on August 1 to hot sunny weather and we rented a car there. Then there was a seven-hour drive to Dawson City.
And it was there that we realized that our rented Ford Edge SUV with four-ply tires, and only a “doughnut” spare was not good for the Dempster, but much to our chagrin, no truck rental -
Riding the rails with Rocky Mountaineer
via theprovince.comThe rounded shape of the Sumas Mountain creeps ever closer as our Rocky Mountaineer train clickety-clacks north and east of Vancouver. I spot wild blackberries alongside the train tracks and rows of corn in the fields next to perfectly weathered wooden barns.

The Home Front: Home design that lasts
via vancouversun.comWe live in a time of disposability, but home decor needn’t be, says Canadian designer and HGTV personality Samantha Pynn.
