Val Litwin: On pro-rep, voters have been given a ballot written in code. So vote 'No'
via vancouversun.comBeginning this week, British Columbians began casting ballots that could change how we elect our provincial leaders. We will either keep our current first-past-the-post system or adopt one of three new models of proportional representation. The B.C. Chamber of Commerce isn’t against PR, per se, but given how unclear the referendum process has been, we urge British Columbians to vote “No.”
The last referendum was held in 2009, with a 61-per-cent majority voting against PR (the s -
Letters to The Province, Oct. 26, 2018: Ignoring Surrey voters’ needs led to loss
via theprovince.comIt’s certainly no surprise that Surrey First lost the election by a landslide. When politicians repeatedly ignore their constituents on issues that affect the city, there’s not a shadow of doubt that their political careers will head straight down the toilet.
The bulldozing through Hawthorne Park, gang violence spiralling out of control and the light-rail transit fiasco show how much the former mayor and council cared about the people who elected them. Miraculously, the public woke u -

via vancouversun.comFORT ST. JOHN — Power has been restored to a northeastern B.C. community affected by a slowly slumping hillside, but the terrain around Old Fort continues to slip and an evacuation order remains.
B.C. Hydro crews began working last week to replace dozens of poles toppled by the creeping landslide and to restring over three kilometres of power lines to more than 50 homes that lost electricity Oct. 6.

Surrey pastor and son, and White Rock man, commit fraud in real estate scheme: BCSC
via vancouversun.comA Surrey pastor and his son, along with a White Rock man, defrauded investors out of $450,000 in a real estate investment scheme, says the B.C. Securities Commission.
A BCSC panel has found that Alan and Jerry Braun, and Steven Maxwell (a.k.a. Steven Fassman), committed fraud when they took the money from two backers that believed they were investing in real estate in Edmonton.
Braun was a pastor at the Royal Heights Baptist Church in Delta, but left earlier this year.

Richmond election: Two rookie councillors could shift ALR mega-mansion policy
via vancouversun.comThe days of new mega-mansions on Richmond farmland may be numbered after voters elected two new faces to council.
On Saturday, newcomers Kelly Greene and Michael Wolfe unseated incumbents Derek Dang and Ken Johnston. Both campaigned on lowering maximum house sizes in the Agricultural Land Reserve — a hot-button election issue after council’s decision in the spring to stick with the 10,764-square-foot limit.

Wine Guy: Three shades of bianco
via theprovince.comI have no particular explanation, but for whatever reason a bevy of Italian white wines have recently cycled through my tasting glass.
Perhaps it’s the run of fine autumn weather that has me clinging to glasses filled with liquid, vestigial sunshine. Maybe it’s the result of fantastic pairing potential with mussels, clams, and other local seafood coming into seasonal bloom.
