Makeover: A cut that's easy to style, while providing volume and texture
via vancouversun.comDesiree Tomkulak is a 53-year-old school secretary who hasn’t had a great cut for the past year and was ready for a change.
Tomkulak’s hair is very straight, which tends to look very flat and unmanageable. It was previously coloured and Tomkulak was hoping for a cut that would be easy to style and that would provide volume and texture.
Her current hairstyle was looking very square, which was making her face shape appear the same. I started by shampooing her hair using KMS Color Vital -

via vancouversun.comFORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Residents of a tight-knit community in northern British Columbia are struggling without answers about when they can return home as scientists try to determine if a nearby slow moving landslide will take a catastrophic turn.

On our wish list this month: A well-mannered, post-modern British roadster
via vancouversun.comIf you’ve ever had the privilege of driving a supercar, you’ve no doubt come away from the exhilarating experience with a couple of questions.
Firstly, why were all these people staring at me? And second, why does my body ache so much? The answer to the former is self-explanatory—“You’re piloting a @#$%ing supercar!”—while the answer to the latter is a dirty secret from the rarefied world of exotic sports cars. And that is: they are bloody uncomfortable -
It’s time to refresh your garden, indoors and out, in preparation for the cooler months ahead
via vancouversun.comNow that our nice summer has abruptly turned into fall, it’s time to add the warmth of “living décor” inside our homes and re-seasoning our patio containers. For the fall and winter, we need to carefully choose indoor plants that will tolerate low light levels, as well as poor humidity conditions. Outdoors, we need to select patio plants able to withstand the cold and wet weather to come.
Some of the best easy-care plants are Dracaena marginata, Philodendron selloum Mons -
Winning a playroom makeover helps one family rebuild their lives
via vancouversun.comIt’s just a playroom. But it’s also so much more than that.
When Versa Platinum Construction renovated the playroom in Sharon Smith’s 1950s-era North Delta home, they also helped her family rebuild their lives. “I feel like we were getting rid of the old and moving forward to the new stage of our lives,” Smith says.
There was plenty of the “old” she wanted to leave behind.
In 2016, just a few weeks before Smith’s maternity leave was to end, her bab -
Cook like a chef: Up your kitchen game by adopting these five pro tips
via vancouversun.com“Why do you need to test a chef’s recipe? Don’t they know how to cook, ha ha?”
Oh, if I only had a dollar for every time someone asked me that. The thing is, chefs don’t cook like you or I do. When they write a recipe, it might work. Then again, they may have left out an ingredient or a step or a measurement that is so instinctive to them it’s like breathing. Meanwhile, we’re left wondering why dinner is a disaster.
I know this because in addition to sev -
Fall’s art exhibits explore ideas and images from around the world

Historic Kelowna packing house now produces cider, table wine and bubbles
via vancouversun.comIn 2008, Jennifer Molgat feared that municipal inspectors would oppose a tasting room licence for her new The View Winery & Vineyard in Kelowna. She thought they might not like the look of the packing house where the winery and its sister producer Wards Cider are located. Built circa 1922, it is the oldest winery building in the Okanagan.
Molgat need not have worried. The inspectors loved the structurally sound building, which now also houses the winery’s charming tasting room.

The Sons of Vancouver amaretto offers sweet proof they’re ready for a comeback
via vancouversun.comIt took James Lester and Richard Klaus 82 attempts before they perfected their recipe for amaretto. Some might wonder why they bothered: it’s not exactly like there was an insatiable demand for the nutty liqueur.
“Amaretto is one of those things that used to be in tons of drinks, but you don’t see anymore,” says Lester, co-owner with Klaus of Sons of Vancouver Distillery in North Vancouver. “Amaretto is one of those things that isn’t cool, but could be cool. I -
In Chicago, the architecture is ambitious by design
via vancouversun.comThe London Guarantee Building with the Willis Tower looming behind it, as seen from the Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise.
The way the the story goes, Chicago earned its Windy City nickname from the hot air billowing from local politicians. Today, though, you’d be safe to assume it was inspired by the icy breeze gusting from Lake Michigan and up the Chicago River.
No matter. Arcing above us is a bluebird sky and, surrounding us, a cluster of bold towers doing their best to reach -
Squamish: Canada’s outdoor capital is also one of its fastest growing communities
via vancouversun.comJust over two years ago, Ben Reeder moved with his family to Squamish. The co-founder of Backcountry Brewing hasn’t looked back.
“I love it here,” he says. “It’s just great because the community is so friendly and people are generally happier here. People smile more and say hello. And everyone out here is actively doing fun stuff. There’s so much to do: paddleboarding, fishing, rock-climbing, the lakes and the trails. It’s overwhelming.”

Rise and Fly
via theprovince.comWith the approach of Old Man Winter, many Canadians are planning their escapes into the warm, sunny and welcoming embrace of Mother Nature.
And while brochures for snowbird destinations promise barefoot walks on sandy beaches, sunsets melting into sparkling oceans and jovial swim-up bars, the simple task of getting there is riddled with anxiety. It begins with the seemingly simple task of arriving at the airport, as winter weather can snarl traffic and provide no end of en-route clammy-handed un -
